Dandruff-help! (brand, hair, skin, shampoos)

I've started noticing these white flakes on my scalp when I comb my hair after getting out of the shower. I've never had dandruff before but I'm assuming this is what it is.

This is awfully embarrassing because I'm afraid people will notice it; I have medium-brown hair and I like to wear it back (I'm afraid this makes it more visible).

Can anyone recommend a good dandruff shampoo? I've tried my husbands Pert Plus and I hate it-it makes my hair greasy and heavy and is yet to work.

I don't have insurance so I don't want to spend money on the doctor for something like this unless absolutely necessary.

Good old Head and Shoulders works great on most cases and comes in a variety of formulas. My husband uses the "classic clean" 2in1 and it controls the flaking and I love the scent. It makes his hair shinier and smoother than other shampoos he has used. Neutrogena makes some coal tar shampoos that will usually work if H&S doesn't.

Shampoos with a coal tar as the active ingredient usually work. Usually the big drug chains (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc.) have a store brand shampoo with coal tar which works just as well as Neutrogena and is much cheaper.

* Try putting some apple cider vinegar on your scalp.
* Take plenty of primrose and salmon oil.
* Wash hair with a good tar shampoo.

Over the counter shampoos work. Try to alternate 2 of them. After a few years of using Nizerol, it was worthless for me. My dr recommended alternating the nice blue head and shoulders (white bottle) and that sulfurous smelling orange head and sholders (blue bottle). This has kept everything in check.

have the flakes, it is the dead skin and other skin growing. I have heard a rinse with vinegar is good also. Maybe do this first and then do the shampoo. Also don't over use the blow-dryer too much, or keep it on low-

I have used apple cider vinegar myself. Also look for an olive oil treatment

What do you do with the vinegar treatment? Do you soak it in your head/scalp prior to shampooing? For how long?

Nioxin brand shampoo...though not stated to be a "dandruff" shampoo, you may just have dry scalp. Regardless, Nioxin cleans the scalp to encourage growth and in the process flakes are gone, not to return. I had the most embarrassing flakes and would switch shampoos every 6 weeks but nothing helped. Five years of Nioxin and I'm thrilled! They make one for "chemically treated" hair which is great for those of us who color.
