I didn't take that as a political comment at all. It was simply a reference to the well-documented fact that Fox News is an unreliable news source that emphasizes sensationalism over facts. It's their trademark.

Checking in on more credible news sources, Crescent City, California is reporting the harbor "destroyed," and at least one person confirmed dead.

not true. these plants use water as a coolant in normal ops but in an emergency there are stores of supercoolants that are used to lower temps faster than water and able to displace heat and return as super coolants. that is what the c-5's brought, just like we brought the super coolant condenser.

those who know me know we are part of the pacific disaster response network (some of you have seen our aircraft at hnl and koa during the '04 & '10 disaster) and know we transport all sorts of massive equipment to these disater locations. fortunetely we were in china when it happened and they have left over supplies from their recent disaster and made it avaialbe within minutes.

we are back in china (yeah less clogged internet available) and will be making another turn and burn back to japan.

write when i can.

OK, that WAS a political comment. Why try to score points at a time like this?

Obviously she was briefed by someone else, and there was some communications slip along the way. Maybe not her fault at all.

According to Christian Science Monitor at one of the reactors the cooling system is running on batteries, and the military is bringing in more of the batteries to keep the cooling system running. Probably what she was referring to.

The damage to this reactor could turn out to be one of the bigger issues resulting from this quake.

I just saw video of water coming over the sea wall in on Ali'i Drive right in front of the shopping area. Also read that King Kamehameha Hotel has extensive water damage. It looks like all the stores in that area will be affected after seeing that. We will be staying at the King Kam in July.

I am neither here nor there re most news media in general and think they ALL lack some credibility - I do see an inference there with the sarcasm emoticon.

As I mentioned, fact or not, many news outlets are reporting the same thing.

Back in the eighties when Japanese people were buying properties left and right on Oahu and probably everywhere else as well, but I was only looking at the Oahu ones, there was someone who said something about a natural disaster in Tokyo (and one would presume any other large city in Japan) would wreck the housing market on Oahu and possibly damage the financial markets as well. It was something about how the Japanese people felt about their homeland and if they needed to rebuild they would sell offshore holdings at firesale prices to get money to rebuild their homeland. At the time, I found the idea of how connected things and events were fascinating, it looks like it is now going to be put into practice. I believe the person making that observation, though, was trying to have a possible scenario which would make rising housing prices fall. It was back during one of those times when folks believed housing prices would never fall because of the high demand.

Hmm, come to think of it, the fellow didn't say "natural disaster" he did specifically say "earthquake", but they've been common in Japan for a long time. Thank goodness they have the building practices they do which takes earthquakes into consideration. If they hadn't this would have been even worse, although it's awfully bad enough.

Has anyone heard of any damage to the commercial docks in Honolulu or California? There was one harbor which they said was destroyed, but was it a commercial harbor which container ships use? It looks like Japan will have had loads of damage to their docking facilities, does anyone know what percentage of their necessities are shipped in? I would suspect a lot.

Ah, inland airport runways might be the only way to get supplies into Japan at the moment, but can they handle the quantity necessary? I don't think Honolulu could be fed by airplanes, I'm thinking Japan would be similar? Maybe airplanes taking food in and folks out would eventually balance the resources with the population, but this is just my own personal musings, I have no educated opinion on this topic.

If anyone hears of dock damage to commercial piers in either California or Hawaii, let us know so we will be able to be prepared. It's quite possible if there were to be lessened shipping that it wouldn't be put out on the news to keep down panic.
