Whatever you got sounds a lot like what i got, hope its a simple cure but to date psychiatrists have done nothing to help the situation,
PS. i'm 70.

GummyShark,

I hope you keep us posted and I hope you share with us your meeting with the Psychiatrist - after a several meetings. It often (but not always) takes time time find out what may be causing your issue.

Best of luck.

Hm... I started taking St. John's Wort and 5HTP to help my depression as I felt it before I took them. It's only been 1-2 months but it's probably a good idea to stop taking them if my psychiatrist will prescribe me meds.

Do you mean a lump or Goiter? Goiter is thyroid related..you can do a lot of research there. Good luck and why not consider a functional/integrative MD when you can, they really work to get to the "root" of things. So many MD's today give a person 15 minutes and write a rx for drugs.

I went 10 yrs with depression and thyroid was dismissed all those years and rx's for A/D drugs....it was thryoid which FINALLY got dx'd by my long time doctor who worked on my back....

My friend with some depression takes 5HTP off and on and I've taken it here and there but it didn't do anything for me. SJW too years ago and it elevated blood pressure, so I ended up on BP meds...I'm decades older than you and been thru a lot of "trys" for issues.

OP's lump has been evaluated. It is a cyst, not a goiter, and her thyroid function studies are normal.

"MD's today" do "work to get to the "root" of things."

Treating someone who has normal thyroid function with thyroid medication would be malpractice.

Ummm, so you are saying the doctor who finally got me on thyroid medication was doing malpractice...He saved my life with no labs even done. Thanks as always but I was talking to OP and then I just looked at her original post again.

And from plenty around these groups, 15 minutes seems to be what a MD visit is.

You shouldn't take both together, and you shouldn't take either one with a prescription antidepressant. 5-HTP was helpful to me in the past, but you have to be really careful with drug interactions.

Find another doctor. I had every symptom of thyroid issues for years. I went to several doctors, including several endocrinologists. They all said my thyroid was fine. One even said she, "Could tell just by looking at me," that I didn't have thyroid issues.

I found a General Practitioner who has a good reputation for treating thyroid issues. He ran a ton more tests that any other doctor ever had. In fact, some had even flat out refused to run anitbodies tests. Well, guess what? The numbers on some of the tests were way out of whack. Got on a thyroid med and have never felt better.

Keep looking for a good doctor. Ask for recommendations from friends or even on Facebook.

Sounds to me like you need to have your testosterone levels checked (unless you're a woman; then the psychiatrist is a good idea). Even at 30, low testosterone levels can produce all of the symptoms you describe (I'm 70). I'm surprised your doctor didn't suggest this or test for it.

No charge for the free medical advice, but, seriously, this is a very common cause of those symptoms. (Ask your internet doctor).
