My vote is the Romans.

When you put Christian children in an arena and then have them raped and killed by drunken babboons TRAINED to do so.....and it's done for entertainment....yeah, that's pretty much the worst.

Or maybe the time when Nero, as a practical joke, had cobras catapulted into the stands instead of lottery tickets.

Surprise!

Default A minor correction

I agree completely with the basic point of your post. The barbarity of the Japanese occupation of the various places they occupied during World War II was indeed stunning. However, I just wanted to correct a minor error: Japan never occupied India. They tried but failed, attacking from Burma, but they were turned back by British and Indian forces under British command. Perhaps you were thinking of Burma, which was occupied.

I think the only country to ever obliterate an enemy city with a bomb harnessing the most fundamental forces of the universe has to at least be in the conversation.

Plenty of civlizations throught out history were or are savage and brutal. In the past century or so the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Communist China, YugoSlavia, Western supported Islamists, and Eastern backed Arab Nationalists were the most brutal.

18th century Empires like Belgium and killed Leopold killed Millions of Africans leaving much of what it today Zaire and Congo relatively poor. Spanish, British and other colonial powers were also brutal. Spanish Empire killed off muslims, and when they were done with the muslims they killed Native Americans and enslaved Africans and South East Asians. The British will also repeat the same process of what the Spanish have done. Revolutionary France was also brutal. Tens of thousands of people were beheaded by the Guillotine. British Empire was also brutal, killed plenty of Native Americans, enslaved Africans, raped Africa's lands and turn Asia upside down. Craist Russia is also brutal but I don't want to get into that.

Mongols were pretty brutal. They would send out embassies to tell Christians and Muslims about their pending doom. When the Mongols sacked one town, and move, they would come back again to the same town they sacked and kill off the remaining residents. Mongols also used to stack skulls into pyramid. Mongols even exterminated races of peoples. Mongols even destroyed Baghdad and left the Middle East in a mess for generations to come. Mongols even raped numerous women. probably a 2% of people all over the world probably have Ghengiz Khan gens or what not thanks to Mongol invasion. Throughout the Middle Ages the Mongols have to be the most barbican out of all civilizations.

Antiquity? I would have to say Ancient Rome and some Greek City States. Sparta used to kill weak babies and so forth. Also Greeks believed heavily in slave labor. Greeks used to kill and persecute those who did not follow the Greek Pagan faith, most notably the Jews in Judea. Romans were also burtal. Gladiatoral games were just one aspect of that, also Romans erased or ethnically cleansed certain ethnic groups or races like Carthage off the face of the Earth.

I'm sure this has been argued already but why aren't we we on that list?

We're the only nation to have used nuclear weapons in anger, that's been at war for it's entire history, that eats the most extremely violent forms of entertainment like (and with) popcorn all the time, that is all armed, constantly shooting at each other and mowing down kids at elementary schools and shopping malls. What about our unabashed "me first" cultural mentality, our willingness to roll around in decadent luxurious excess while our fellow countrymen literally starve to death outside our doors.

How about our soldiers regularly taking home the body parts of their enemies as trophies? What about CIA torture camps? Regularly targeting civilians in war? Fomenting bloody revolutions, installing brutal puppet dictatorships, aiding and abetting the illegal drug trade, being the #1 global arms dealer and #1 spender on fun and interesting new ways to kill other people?

I'm pretty sure "USA" means "Uninhibited Savagery Anonymous" and historians of the future will put us high on the list of animals who claimed to be men.

Agreed, these are things for which Western Civilization should be (and, in general, is) ashamed of. But I hope you are not suggesting that these things are somehow specific to, or limited to, the West.

1. Uprooting of natives: any Imperial power -- Western, Eastern, Northern, Southern, and anyplace else -- has done this.

2. Enslaving people of color: would it have been better if we had enslaved white people instead? Seriously, slavery has existed long before Western Civilization reared its "ugly" head. What seems to be often overlooked is that Western Civilization was a driving force in the abolition of legally sanctioned slavery.

3. Rampant and incorrigible racism: show me ANY society, in ANY place, at ANY time in history, that has been totally devoid of racism. Seriously, if there were/are any, I would really like to know about it. (Mono-racial societies that never had any contact with the outside world don't count.)

4. Hypocritical use of the Bible: I'll give you this one. Though to be fair, Christianity has long been a predominantly Western religion, so it stands to reason that the misuse of its holy book would be mainly a Western phenomenon. But as Christianity continues its spread into non-Western cultures, we can expect to see the Bible being misused by an increasingly multicultural cast of characters.

There was a lot of death in the Soviet Union, much of which was not caused by natural causes. The holacaust, however, is probably the ugliest event in human history.

Perhaps the 722 AD Asyrians as they multilated there victims as
a means of precipitating fear. Ironically ISIS and ISIL counterfeit
Islamics are decendants of the Asyrians a inherited or psychotic
nature morphing nearly seamlessly in our times. There are about 20 pattens, events, or mimics of 722AD that were
discovered in dissecting 9/11 adding to a bizzare link.
