The best "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants where I live (Alabama) are BBQ, soul food, Southern, and fish joints!

Cajun Kitchen on the corner of Bellaire and Kirkwood. Reasonably priced, large portion sizes, and the best boiled crawfish in Houston hands down (and I've tried a lot of places). For those of you who are picky about your crawfish here are more details, they are big and well seasoned (you choose how hot) - the crawfish and corn, potatoes, etc are all boiled IN the crawfish "boil", it's not seasoning just poured on top.

It seems like Houston is very influenced by Louisiana and New Orleans. Yum to crawfish!

We do this a couple of times a year, either with shrimp or crawfish. It's a great way to cook a lot of food for several people. And darn good eating too.

Our favorite hole-in-the-wall is Manny's Cafe, which is a tiny place located in a strip plaza on Route 6 and West Road near Copperfield.

Manny himself serves up Greek food and basically he specializes in Gyros, including a few creative variations like Greek-style meatballs in a pita and Gyro Cheesesteak.

I love a good Gyro but Souvlaki is my favorite. Last time we were there I asked Manny why he doesn't serve Souvlaki and his answer was that his kitchen is too small to make it fresh every day, and he won't serve it if it's not fresh!

Tell me those weren't the famous tomato sauce "greek-style meatballs", grilled meat balls with a light taste of tomato sauce. I love those and I had them in some "holes in the walls"places in Greece. Never had them here in USA. I would love to have them locally if I can. I will definitely stop by.

Will have to try Manny's for greek. Couldn't make out the print on the menu (tiny!) - do they serve lamb & green beans? When I used to live in Buffalo, one of the Greek restaurant owner's mother would make lamb & green beans special just for a guest when he would come into town. When I started working for the guest & would fly into Bflo, I started trying foods outside my comfort zone (I don't eat lamb). I loved her lamb & green beans!

Wanted to add another hole in the wall suggestion: Thai Style Fast Food - Chinatown - Houston, TX at S. Gessner & Harwin (off of 8 and Westpark Tollway).

Not at all fast food. It was great. Lots of heat for those who want it while still flavorful. Had fried tofu, cream cheese egg rolls (the kids), pad thai with shrimp, chicken & pork, basil fish (excellent!) and ground pork with green beans. Food was fresh and veggies in their dishes were crisp - not at all wilted & devoid of natural color. We'll definitely be going back. Inexpensive, too!

In the same plaza is a bakery owned by the family of a friend - http://www.yelp.com/biz/parisian-bakery-houston. I didn't stop in today but have had a lot of their filled breads & pastries (hah - what do you think they always bring to gatherings?). Very good as well.
