Currently living in Oklahoma, husband is in military and will be getting out soon. He grew up in New Caney and wants to move back there and I'd like to get some input. I've never been there but checking out the schools on greatschools.org seems to show that many of the elementary schools have a high level of economically disadvantaged students and the high school has a low overall rating (5 out of 10). I've done some searching and it seems to have a "ghetto" reputation and I don't want to live in a trashy area.

So, tell me the good and the bad. I don't understand why my husband is drawn to move back to this area. I'm originally from the Austin area.

Your research is correct. Kingwood is a much better choice for schools but more expensive. New Caney has a lot of drugs. I sound negative but actually I am not. There are good and bad people everywhere, juat shooting straight with you.

Go a littel further south (i.e. a couple of exits on the freeway) to Kingwood. Better neighborhoods, better schools, better shopping (unless only a Walmart for your shopping is your thing). A little further south than that is Atascocita - also with great schools.

I read The Woodlands Villagers habitually, I find that a lot of Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has a lot more report in that area on their crime log than other ares. And very few business are over there in that area. If you like peaceful setting, I hit up around Magnolia if you like something similar to New Caney/Porter area.

If your idea of a good time is hanging out in the parking lot of Super Walmart then Porter may be the town for you.
