And Also- In defense of Houston<< I also took the approach at one point in time that Houston was an ugly bad city unworthy of any attention.

I promise that as soon as I arrived back from my 2-week vacation to Europe I appreciated Houston more than ever.

It truly is a WORLD CLASS CITY. One worthy of attention.

I have 171 posts, I never said anything about Yankees,I said nothing about friendliness, and I lived in The Woodlands so I have a pretty good idea of the area. The Woodlands is not Houston. Thank You.

Ghetto doesn't necessarily mean african-american. It refers to the chrome-rimmed big wheeled escalades parked in front of a dilapidated home that may or may not have running water. The owners in their gucci sunglasses with their designer duds on who can't afford running water but they look good. My best friend introduced me to this phrase - she is hispanic and lovingly refers to her own cousins as "ghetto fabulous", grown, live at home in a rundown house with many family members, don't further their education, but they look good and drive pricey cars.

ok, you would love to see more integration yet you are moving to the whitest, most color paranoid burb in Houston?

We were originally set to move into an apartment in Uptown, but a job adjustment moved us to the Woodlands area. I was comparing Houston vs. Detroit, not so much the suburbs. We aren't planning to hide in our apartment...the city is only 30 minutes away.

There is "ghetto" in the sense of what people wear and how they speak, and then there's ghetto in terms of bombed-out neighborhoods, high crime areas, infinite blight, almost no economic vitality, etc.

I would say that Houston is pretty average among large cities in terms of the former but has not yet suffered the ills of latter (specifically, neighborhood decay) to the degree that some older cities, specifically from the Rust Belt, have suffered.

There are areas of Houston that have high crime rates but on the surface don't quite resemble some of the areas to which you are referring in Detroit (or Cleveland or Chicago, for that matter).

The point is, like most big cities, there's some good and some bad. A little bit of general research into the landscape should give you a feel for what matches your desires and what doesn't.

Generally speaking... the most notable areas you'll find in Houston in terms of blight, decay and economic despair are in patches to the northeast of downtown, which include areas like Fifth Ward, Settegast, Kashmere and Liberty Gardens. The NE quad is the smallest and is the least populated. Much of the landscape is derived from older farming communities from the late 19th and early 20th Century that the city annexed in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Some exceptions can be found in Acres Homes and Independence Heights in NW Houston and Sunnyside on the south side. Remember, you're talking about a Sunblet city, and the issue of decay and blight is displayed differently here than in more traditional locales in the northeast and midwest.

In terms of crime... the biggest hotbed, right now, is within specific areas in far SW Houston, such as Fondren Southwest, Gulfton and the lower half of Sharpstown. Some exceptions include parts of Greenspoint in far north Houston. This isn't to say that there is no crime in other areas of city--far from the truth--but that these are the areas in which crime is a prominent concern.

In short, it's a big city with very expansive boundaries so you'll have a lot of room to "shop".

Good luck!

Uhh, Ive lived in the Woodlands too<< I was clarifying that the only problem with the Woodlands is Yankees -- Not Your paranoid idea that anyone foreign is seen with disgust.

The woodlands isn't Houston? What was all this talk about Annexation only a few months ago?

Once again, please don't attempt to generalize an entire community of over 50k people.

I think that term was made popular from a hardcore/gangsta rap song from the late 90s. To my generation, anyway....

I think you're exaggerating a bit. I'm from the Detroit area so I know firsthand all about Detroit's troubles and triumphs.

It's no secret that the state's economy is ruined - the jobs that are lost today will not be equal to the job opportunities that will be created tomorrow. Long gone are the days of unions, factory jobs that pay $80k per year, etc. This is Michigan's problem which has terrible effects on its largest city - Detroit.

I grew up in the suburbs, went to college in the city, and then moved moved back to the suburbs after graduation. I was never a victim of crime because I made smart choices and was raised with lots of common sense.

This is why I chose to move to Houston - my love for a strong, urban, up & coming community with never-ending options for career growth and stability.

To 3rdHeaven: Don't be so harsh on Detroit, it just isn't that bad...

But anyway I heard of people dogging out some of the nice places in Houston and I wanted to comment but the thread was closed. And it seems like some people in Houston are so picky and just are not satisfied at all. Now I live in Detroit and just for the negative comments that I've read about Houston, you people need to feel blessed that you DO NOT LIVE IN DETROIT! Detroit is number 1 in murders/crime in the nation. Every year we are always in the top 2! So many times I have step outside of my job working and within 50 feet someone is shooting!! I was driving down 6mile road going home from work when someone just pulled a gun out and started shooting! This former US Marine how just got back from Iraq was driving to his job on Northwest Detroit when a truck pulled up and started firing on him. He then jumped out of the truck and started running, but the gunmen chased him down and shot him to death. You talk about ghetto houston? You come to Detroit and see the real and true meaning of GHETTO! I've lived here for 36 years and it is super bad. My brother in-law got a shot gun pull to his head when he went to CVS. I know ever city has its crime but right now, Detroit is ranked number 1. It's a war out here in the streets of detroit. We have a ghetto mayor! The great majority is African americans but I'd rather be around more of a diverse population. We are still segregated here because when you leave out of city limits then there are whites. There are no activities for the young people besides the science center and the museum. The only real thing that Detroit has are 3 casinos. So seeing how there is not much for the youth to do here, they get in trouble far greater than most. Downtown Detroit is so small with one tall building which is the GM building. So all of things that you guys have in Houston like the luxury to drive down to the gulf of mexico, or visit the aquarium and so many nice eateries and buildings, beautiful parks. The negative people that live in houston should be thanking God that they live there and not Detroit, MI! We have super cold winters and ice storms. You guys have nice warm air. So is houston really that bad?? I know it's better than Detroit and will blow Detroit out of the water. So many good citizens from Detroit have either visited or moved there and said how beautiful houston is. Houston can't be that be right??

most of my child hood i spent in houston going to visit family members in south park, 5th ward(the nickel), jersey village, sharpstown basically all of houston and i can say that IMO, houston wasnt that bad, it had it's times but it was times when i was 12 where we would walk around blocks in housto nat night and not have to worry about what you just said. But i think things in houston got worse when the new orleans evacuees moved here because now you have people trying to prove a point
