Long gone are the days of unions, factory jobs that pay $80k per year, etc. This is Michigan's problem which has terrible effects on its largest city - Detroit.

I grew up in the suburbs, went to college in the city, and then moved moved back to the suburbs after graduation. I was never a victim of crime because I made smart choices and was raised with lots of common sense.

This is why I chose to move to Houston - my love for a strong, urban, up & coming community with never-ending options for career growth and stability.

To 3rdHeaven: Don't be so harsh on Detroit, it just isn't that bad...
Trust me I know first hand. I'm not purposely dogging the city. I pray for the city but it is super bad. Why is it that every year Detroit is always in the top 3 national crime spots?? I have family members that works in the Detroit Police Dept downtown and they often show me the numbers of crime/murders etc and they are bad! I work in the hospital and the ER is packed with people and mainly gun shots victims. I've watch how the streets that I grew up on were once nice areas but turned bad and violent. And can you tell me why detroit is lossing it's population so greatly?? Did you see the special interview on the city on NBC and why the population is decreasing and the people that was interviewed say they left or are leaving because number 1 the crime and then the jobs? You see I was once blinded by the people in Detroit and it's not all the people but it starts with city governent and the people that live in the neighborhoods. I've been to other cities and Detroit has a long way to go. But like I said I was once blinded by the things that is going on in the city because I was out there in the streets myself but when I gave my life back to Christ, my eyes were so open. I will contiue to pray for the city, the mayor, the citizens and everyone else. Other cities that I've been to for a long period of time run their cities much different and it's so much cleaner and nice like Chicago, Orlando, New York city, Windsor, Ontario etc. Now there are nice some nice neighborhoods in Detroit but as soon as you leave off the area onto the streets, then its bad again being surrounded by bad.

I'm from the Detroit area also and I'm relocating to Spring in a few months. I'm happy to report that the Houston natives I've been in contact with aren't out to dog their city. In fact, everyone's been proud and welcoming. I think it's a marked difference to the current Detroit attitude, where "things are bad and getting worse." Is Detroit a nightmare city? Hardly. It's a difficult city with a complicated past and a host of economic problems, but there are nice neighborhoods, too. Great sports teams, lots of cultural attractions. And the surrounding areas are beautiful -- lakes and parks and lots of amenities. I know I'll miss it, warts and all.

Exactly I agree with you when did Ghetto mean black...it means a neighborhood that is of mostly poor people...believe you me I have many friends that live in a white ghetto and we compare.

My best friend introduced me to this phrase - she is hispanic and lovingly refers to her own cousins as "ghetto fabulous", grown, live at home in a rundown house with many family members, don't further their education, but they look good and drive pricey cars.

athirdheaven, I agree with you,Detroit is bad and that's the truth! Most of the people here have never lived in the parts of detroit that me and you have so they will never understand what we are talking about. They always say I'm from the Detroit area meaning Dearborn or Warren somewhere. That is not Detroit! We are talking about Detroit proper, the ghetto, the hood. I'v seen so much violence in my lifetime that I can write a book about it. For instance, last month in my neighborhood a group of teens was walking in the streets when a car try to pass and they honk the horn, someone from the group threw a water bottle at the car and a person from inside the vehicle open fire injuring two of the boys. This is the violence you will witness often on the Streets of Detroit. The streets are war zones and even the schools aren't safe anymore. I hear gunshots almost every other day and there are crackheads walking up and down the block, plus on the ave there are hookers waving people down right in front of the liqour stores. This is what you will see when you venture into my neighborhood on 6mile and Gratiot, believe me it's nothing nice. Detroit is Bad!

I'm not too concerned about what they say in Phoenix. I don't really trust the judgement of folks who have their heads baked by 115 degree temperatures over and over every summer. You know what they call a 105 degree afternoon in Phoenix? A cool front.

But anyway I heard of people dogging out some of the nice places in Houston and I wanted to comment but the thread was closed. And it seems like some people in Houston are so picky and just are not satisfied at all. Now I live in Detroit and just for the negative comments that I've read about Houston, you people need to feel blessed that you DO NOT LIVE IN DETROIT! Detroit is number 1 in murders/crime in the nation. Every year we are always in the top 2! So many times I have step outside of my job working and within 50 feet someone is shooting!! I was driving down 6mile road going home from work when someone just pulled a gun out and started shooting! This former US Marine how just got back from Iraq was driving to his job on Northwest Detroit when a truck pulled up and started firing on him. He then jumped out of the truck and started running, but the gunmen chased him down and shot him to death. You talk about ghetto houston? You come to Detroit and see the real and true meaning of GHETTO! I've lived here for 36 years and it is super bad. My brother in-law got a shot gun pull to his head when he went to CVS. I know ever city has its crime but right now, Detroit is ranked number 1. It's a war out here in the streets of detroit. We have a ghetto mayor! The great majority is African americans but I'd rather be around more of a diverse population. We are still segregated here because when you leave out of city limits then there are whites. There are no activities for the young people besides the science center and the museum. The only real thing that Detroit has are 3 casinos. So seeing how there is not much for the youth to do here, they get in trouble far greater than most. Downtown Detroit is so small with one tall building which is the GM building. So all of things that you guys have in Houston like the luxury to drive down to the gulf of mexico, or visit the aquarium and so many nice eateries and buildings, beautiful parks. The negative people that live in houston should be thanking God that they live there and not Detroit, MI! We have super cold winters and ice storms. You guys have nice warm air. So is houston really that bad?? I know it's better than Detroit and will blow Detroit out of the water. So many good citizens from Detroit have either visited or moved there and said how beautiful houston is. Houston can't be that be right??
....so you come to a Houston forum and bash Detroit.

Don't believe all this nonsense people!

Detroit has enough issues without people making it seem 10 times worse. It's not enough to move out of the city. They feel the need to trash it. I'll be 30 years old next month and have never dealt with this mythical urban warzone that is outside my door. I just asked my gf who has lived in other parts. She doesn't have any reports of being accosted by hookers, crackheads or being robbed, shot, stabbed or raped. Alot of bad things happen to bad people. Shocking...I know.

meh....I just don't know. I'm not going to say crime doesn't happen. Of course it does. But in all my 28 years in this city. I have not witnessed, or had a crime happen to me. And I was a bit out there. I grew up in Brightmoor, one of the most notorious neighborhoods, and I remember it as being dead and empty. There were no gang members prowling about at night waiting to rape/stab/shoot/kill someone. I was a teenager out at night...BY MYSELF, and no one has bothered me. I don't hear gunshots ringing out at all times of the day and night. I don't walk down the street and see random people getting killed as they drive down the street. I live downtown now.....right in the heart, and it is DEAD. There is no one here at night. If there is not an event going on, then there is nothing to do. I've had to go to work, and leave at 3, 4 and 5 in the morning...BY MYSELF, and I have run into no one. Like I said, I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, and it could be possible that crime just follows some people....it's just never happened to me, and I feel totally safe here. *shrugs*
