Why Do People Dogg Houston? I'm From Detroit!
I have read several comments by people who live in Houston and have heard them complain about how ghetto Houston is and I guess ghetto would mean run down areas where african americans live which I also am african american! But anyway I heard of people dogging out some of the nice places in Houston and I wanted to comment but the thread was closed. And it seems like some people in Houston are so picky and just are not satisfied at all. Now I live in Detroit and just for the negative comments that I've read about Houston, you people need to feel blessed that you DO NOT LIVE IN DETROIT! Detroit is number 1 in murders/crime in the nation. Every year we are always in the top 2! So many times I have step outside of my job working and within 50 feet someone is shooting!! I was driving down 6mile road going home from work when someone just pulled a gun out and started shooting! This former US Marine how just got back from Iraq was driving to his job on Northwest Detroit when a truck pulled up and started firing on him. He then jumped out of the truck and started running, but the gunmen chased him down and shot him to death. You talk about ghetto houston? You come to Detroit and see the real and true meaning of GHETTO! I've lived here for 36 years and it is super bad. My brother in-law got a shot gun pull to his head when he went to CVS. I know ever city has its crime but right now, Detroit is ranked number 1. It's a war out here in the streets of detroit. We have a ghetto mayor! The great majority is African americans but I'd rather be around more of a diverse population. We are still segregated here because when you leave out of city limits then there are whites. There are no activities for the young people besides the science center and the museum. The only real thing that Detroit has are 3 casinos. So seeing how there is not much for the youth to do here, they get in trouble far greater than most. Downtown Detroit is so small with one tall building which is the GM building. So all of things that you guys have in Houston like the luxury to drive down to the gulf of mexico, or visit the aquarium and so many nice eateries and buildings, beautiful parks. The negative people that live in houston should be thanking God that they live there and not Detroit, MI! We have super cold winters and ice storms. You guys have nice warm air. So is houston really that bad?? I know it's better than Detroit and will blow Detroit out of the water. So many good citizens from Detroit have either visited or moved there and said how beautiful houston is. Houston can't be that be right??

Sounds like you can't get out of there fast enough! I've lived here 26+ years and have never experienced any horrific crime first hand. Houston is a hugh city and like any other city has it share of problems. If you exercise caution/common sense and treat other well you should have no issues. Don't focus on the "drama postings", this is a great city with a lot to offer.

I second what sunny says. Sure crime got worse when the Katrina people came but it's not that bad. It still is a pretty good city for its size. So much to do. So much to see.

Familiar With Detroit...
I live near Detroit and I know what you're saying. Detroit can be very rough. I wouldn't say it's as bad as you make it out to be, but it's close. Those areas you are referring to are not ALL of Detroit, so I don't want people to get the wrong idea, but yes, the downtown here is pretty unsafe most of the time and the segregation between city and suburbs is terrible. I would love it if it was more integrated. My fiance and I are moving to Houston (The Woodlands actually) this spring and are extremely excited.
Screw the complaints about the weather -- I won't miss this horrible midwest weather. Frozen and icy in the winter, humid as hell in the summer.
What I will miss are the sports. Detroit is the best sports town in America. Pistons (2nd in the NBA right now), Red Wings (#1), Tigers (major contenders), Michigan football (winningest program of all time), MSU basketball (top 10), Michigan and MSU hockey, etc. Everything else, however, is better in Houston. Lower crime, lower taxes, better economy, more culture, better weather, better shopping, more accessible, and more entertainment.

I've heard stories about Detroit. And they have those ''Animal Cops'' TV shows in different cities and by far Detroit just looks the worst and the winters those abused animals deal with just seem brutal.
As for the crime, in Houston it is mostly petty stuff that annoys you. If you have a $99+ CD player in your car in plain sight, I guarantee one of these days it will be stolen. Having a detachable face and a clean car nearly solves it, unless they're going for the whole ride. For that, you can simply have decent insurance. These things always seem to happen when you're not around.
As far as violent crime is concerned, the vast majority tends to be ''internal'' meaning if you are just a dude minding his own business, you'll be fine. As far as passing through or getting down in the ''hood'' here, I don't have a problem. At worst I'm begged for money (or gas). On the other hand, getting down in a sketchy L.A. hood almost scared me. Stone cold folks there ain't playing. But I can only imagine Detroit from all the stories.

Paranoid, really? I wouldn't know, I've only passed through. There are people who vehemently swear up and down it is not, though.
You are right, though, homogeneous it is...

well, obviously your move to houston is an upgrade. congratulations, you will have a wonderful time here as long as you dont bring the ghetto ways. you will love it like most who upgraded from a really bad place. theres alot bad neighborhoods here, normally these are areas where clans and clans of transplants gather, many times jam themselves up in single family homes/apartments. they want to be near 'their kind' so that they dont need to look good for others to see and they can be as punk/ghangsta/ghetto as they can be. many times they will creep to better neighborhoods for that MTV cribs lifestyle (bringing the ghetto to the upscale neighborhoods)
as for dogging houston, you need to learn who the people/posters in here are and what their pet peeves are then you can read the posts better. some are venting, most are saying they bought the best and other places suck. others are totally in love with houston, while some are just questioning other peoples exageration of the houston experience

I'm sorry, but I registered just to oppose this comment. Its unfortunate someone like you has posted over 150 posts. Your perspective is greatly ignorant and only further dampens any potential judgment on Houston, or the Greater Houston Area.
Though I don't know your credibility on the subject, ill insist that I have credibility here. I deliver party rental equipment all over town< Lake wood church, West-Side Tennis Club, The Galleria, The Woodlands- and a variety of other well known Houston areas/landmarks.
I have delivered to the woodlands more times than I can count- each time I have had to interact with an adult of the household.
The woodlands, like any other place in Houston- Has its YANKEES<<
Thats honestly, about the only rude thing you can say about anyone in the woodlands. People from the north who aren't well adjusted yet, may not be as open and friendly as those born and bred here.
Other than that, people are just as friendly there- as in any other part in town.
Please do not attempt to put stereotypes are assumptions on an entire community of people- It rarely works.
