I always though of those as "gourmet" supermarkets that catered very much to a higher-end clientele. Randall's was much more mass-market, and the Flagship model was intended to appeal to be upscale and middle-class shoppers looking for a nicer experience without gourmet prices (though Randall's ended up being known for higher prices anyway).

Randalls was the best grocery chain in Houston, until Randall Onstead sold his chain to Tom Thumb. Everything went downhill from there.

HEB is the best now.....love it.

So Randall’s didn’t directly sell to Albertsons? Did Albertsons purchase Tom Thumb later on? Or how did that work?

Edit: After a quick google search, I’m reading that Randall’s actually purchased Tom Thumb and Albertsons later purchased Randall’s which then gave Albertsons both stores. Now they’re no different to an Albertsons and the price increased.

You're missing a piece. Safeway bought Randall's / Tom Thumb in 1999. Then Albertsons bought Safeway some years later.

I go there for small, in and out items since there's never much of a wait.

I prefer Randall’s but there is no longer a convenient one. I find HEB overcrowded, and prices creeping up considerably whereas I can spend less by shopping elsewhere from time to time. H‑E‑B is also really pushing their own brand products and less other brand products or else a very small selection of other name brand products.

Is it a better place to shop for better cut of meat and fresher seafood?
I visited many of them and feel like they are a kroger with premium pricing.
