I agree, the rules changed, but it was still being done.
Several chops in the North London area of North Finchley still served in news paper in the 1980's and as recently as the mid 1990's.

We had some shops that used what looked like newspapers (basically, newspaper pages printed on butcher paper). These shops mainly catered to tourists. The chip shop we had across the street was an original chip shop for locals and did use newspaper before it was outlawed.

OK, we're gonna agree somewhere ...
The shops that I talk about were also the old shops serving the locals.
Rules be damned, they did stick to traditions.
Some of those shops I had known since the early 1970s and I wish they were still there.

Reminds me of what a good friend (*) always said : ""God please protect me from the darn Do-Gooders, the Bad Guys I can handle myself."

(*) I went to this friend's funeral 2 weeks ago, he was right...

And BTW, when I spoil myself with a good fish & chips dinner at home , I still serve this for myself in a real newspaper ... close my eyes and eat and dream ... :-)

LOL - I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just describing what I experienced.

Our chip shop across the street did a booming business and certainly couldn't get away with using newspaper. The other chip shops we visited were in areas of heavy foot traffic, including tourists, and used the printed butcher paper for nostalgic reasons.

I'm certainly not saying that you couldn't possibly have visited a chip shop that still used newspapers to wrap the fish and chips. That would be like saying you can't find a mom and pop store in The South that still sells pickles, pickled pigs feet, sausages, and pickled eggs out of large open jars.

BTW - it's amazing what the government over there is protecting people from these days. I don't know how people manage to get through each day when left on their own .

I can't prepare a good fish and chips dinner. Now, where did you say you live? LOL - I do hope you sprinkle it with some malt vinegar and have a pickled onion on the side for an authentic experience.
