The children of immigrants, including Mexican-Americans, outperform the first generation. Their progress is encouraging and indicative of the melting pot at work. Mexican immigrants are a good example of this. They make up the largest and least-educated immigrant group. While they make the biggest gains after coming to the United States, they lag behind the national average in education and wage outcomes after several generations because they assimilate not to the national schooling average but to the Hispanic average. In sum, worrying about immigrant assimilation boils down to worrying about ethnic differences in educational outcomes in the United States. please show me where "anchor babies" are cited as dropping out at a 50% rate. is that a national stat? is that a stat specific to miami? LA? chicago?
its an interesting number. i know that in LAUSD the graduation rates are pretty low, but that is a complicated issue having to do more with urban ills than citizenship. besides, many so called anchor babies, or citizens as they may be, serve this country as cops, teachers, military men, border patrol, chefs, etc. i dont think they are the problem.

Contrary to popular belief, there are actually schools in Mexico, public schools and the same people coming here illegally had a high drop out rate back home and that didn't magically change just because they chose to sneak over the border.
It's all about attitudes, the same attitude that has them believing they are not expected to abide by our laws, wait their turn like legal immigrants do. It's an attitude of entitlement, just like they figure if they break the laws here, they can demand amnesty, if they fail to finish school, they can demand government handouts.

Now for weird: maybe because the reputation of 'Hispanics' has been so sullied as a group due in large part to the MEChA types-----------whenever I see 'Ugly Betty', it reminds me of Middle Class Italian culture.

European immigrants have done very badly. Hardly any of them speak any Amerindian languages, and they've had plenty of time since 1492! And the Germanic migrants to Britain never bothered to learn its native languages either! Etc.
Need for language is subjective.
