I take a fence at this entire thread. It borders on the tasteless. It crosses the line, IMHO, and exceeds the boundaries of polite discussion. Why are we arguing about FENCES anyway? We all know fences don't keep people out...so enough of the barbed comments, please.
This is my final post on the subject....I'm getting board. Time to go picket the local TV station.
If you own a house or buy fruits or have baby sitters you maybe have benefit from Illegals. You house was cheaper because of Illegals and so were you fruits and vegetables. Humans will always look for a deal.
So if you have Joe Blow the White fence maker who is going to charger you $2500 to put your fence up and then you have Pancho the Mexican dude that is going to do it for $ 1000 are you going to ask Pancho " Hey are you Illegal and then pay Joe Blow $ 2500? HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!! Pancho gets job end of story.
Fruit and houses cost more today then they ever have, so where is my savings?
I am going to go with the idea that Pancho is an illegal -- after all, your first paragraph states that everyone has benefitted from illegal labor, your second paragraph is about how cheap Pancho is. And American (citizen or legal immigrant) contractors are not going to be able to survive with a bid less the half of the going price.
So, Pancho is illegal.
Now, going with your theory that everyone loves a bargain thus illegality should be condoned.
The same argument was used by the South --'everyone who wears cotton/smokes tobacco/eats sugar are benefitting from slavery thus slavery is OK'
Well, it wasn't OK, and everyone somehow was able to survive with slightly more expensive cotton/tobacco/sugar.
Outstanding point, I would rep you if I could. Have to spread it around.

The house was built in 1957. It is a fair bet that many of the men who built the house are either dead or cannot remember building it. Also most construction workers in Texas in the 1950s were white or black, not Latino, according to people I have asked. I was curious whether north Texas had a long tradition of Latino construction workers. We do not.
This is an extremely good point! You always want a contractor to be bonded because if they are not and their subs injure themselves on your property, guess who gets sued? YOU!!!!!! You also want them to be licensed because some local authorities (including the city where I bought my house) are cracking down on unlicensed contractors and insist on inspections for electrical and many types of construction work and if you cannot produce evidence that the work was carried out by someone licensed by that local authority, guess what? Fine! Or you have to rip it out and do it again.
I close on my house in 29 days and have already lined up a licensed and bonded American contractor to carry out some electrical and construction work on my house. He is fully qualified to do all of the work I am asking him to do and has an outstanding reputation in the community.
Yes, I believe only a fool would go with a contractor that is not licensed and bonded. Imagine having a cheap unskilled, untrained worker injured on your property, and of course his employer has no insurance of any kind on him, isn't paying into workman's comp and all that.
Who can he sue? His illegal employer who probably also has a fake stolen ID? Or who would skip town if there's a lawsuit from one of his injured illegal employers.
With illegal workers, you have no clue at all that they've ever been up on a roof before, were ever trained to work with electricity or know anything about safety.
A woman here picked up an illegal "handyman" and he raped her and took off. That is quite a lot less likely with a licensed and bonded business which wants to keep it's BBB rating.

I agree. I will never be going to the local Home Depot to find day laborers to do minor work on my house. I will pay licensed bonded contractors and handymen a fair rate to do that work, though.
In DFW you can take your pick from illegal immigrants looking for work and lots of people in the outer suburbs use them to do simple things like trim hedges, spread mulch, etc. Not me! I am going to put my money where my mouth is and I will not be part of the problem.

We operate a seasonal produce market. I can show you in black and white an $8000 loss because of illegal vending by these people. City and county show little intrerest in enforcing existing law. Were leaving Ca. this summer and this is one of the main reasons.
I have plenty of choices when I need to have yard work done.
But now I can't afford it.
