Those who literally cross the border illegally seem like the ones who would end up back in their country of origin, discouraged without much keeping them here besides a desperate need to come home with money.
The very significant number of illegal immigrants who came here legally, but are on expired visas are the ones who have likely built lives here and are willing to wait out the current economy.
I agree that it is moronic and offensive to equate Hispanics with illegal immigrants. Hispanics are not a new presence in the United States, many are citizens, many are here legally. So a Hispanic speaking Spanish does not mean illegal alien. This is where injecting race into the topic becomes an issue. Doing that angers many Hispanic-Americans who can be a powerful political force, one with a growing voice that in the past used to be alienated.
It would make sense for people who are against immigration reform to play nice with the Hispanic/Latino community of America. But it's something they can't grasp, and always fail on.

I think it's time that the Hispanics start playing nice with Americans. That means take down their foreign flags that show a rather stupid patriotism to a country they refuse to live in and work to improve. That means they make some kind of effort to learn the language and traditions of this country and stop expecting everyone to cater to them. And respect the laws of this country, understand that there should be immigration but that immigration should be balanced and fair, and that one ethnicity is not entitled to unlimited immigration but all people should follow the legal process, wait their turn.

to play nice with the Hispanic/Latino community of America.
CaliforniaBear said it -- he sure implies that hispanics are a pro-illegal/pro-open borders monolith -- and makes the threat that Americans had better "play nice" with them.
Yes it's possible there are hispanics that respect the need for immigration laws and the legal orderly process. Probably not all are for open borders and unlimited immigration from hispanic countries, but there are those who insist that through massive uncontrolled immigration, "hispanics" are going to take over the USA.

And the odds are much greater that Mexico will lose a significant chunk of its territory to the USA since the folks in Nuevo Leon, etc. are quite pissed at the ineptitude of Mexico City concerning the drug wars.
