Moving from Scottsdale, AZ to Springfield, IL
Hello,
We are moving from beautiful Scottsdale, AZ to Springfield, IL.
I've never been here...could someone tell me which are the best places to live near the Springfield area?
Thanks!
Pia

There are new subdivisions on the west side of Springfield.
They are:
Deerfield
Scarborough
Cobblestone
Centennial Park
They are approximately 2-3 miles past Toy's R Us off of Iles and Veterans Parkway.
Worse sides of Springfield are east (all neighborhoods), southeast (all neighborhoods) and a very small portion of southwest (apartment complexes only)

Of course, new suburbs are also the most expensive, generally speaking. Spfld also has a great selection of older historic homes, as well as some nice areas with affordable housing. And, the outlying areas (Riverton, New Berlin, Rochester, Chatham, Sherman) offer affordable housing prices with a short (15 - 30 min) commute to anywhere in the city. Moderator cut: private message

I am not sure of the price range you are looking for, but there are some great older neighborhoods near the Washington Park neighborhood and there are some great homes around MacArthur Blvd. and Outer Park Drive.

A lot of people choose the "suburbs" of Springfield. The main ones are Chatham (to the south), Rochester (to the east), Sherman (to the north), and Pleasant Plains (to the west). Chatham tends to be a bit more upscale. Sherman is possibly the best housing deal. We live in Leland Grove, which is a small incorporated village within the Springfield city limits. It has lots of big, nice, older homes. Big, wide streets with old, established trees, and right next to Washington Park, which is gorgeous.
The schools in Springfield are *not* good. There is a gifted magnet school for kids up to 5th grade, but past that, it's not great. Chatham and Rochester have better schools.
Springfield itself is easy to get around in. I can get all the way across town in 20 minutes or less. The best shopping is on the southwest side, or the northeast side. Downtown is going through a revival as well, with some nice shops and restaurants.
I hope that helps

Depends . . .
I moved here from the desert also. I limited my home search to Chatham, because I was not aware at the time that West Sringfield is ALSO in the Chatham district. There are a lot of kids from Springfield in the Chatham high school (Glenwood). It takes me 30 minutes to get to work (mid-town Springfield) no matter what route I take.
It really depends on what you are looking for--whether or not you have kids . . . etc. as to where you would like to live.

some sudgestions
first of all, you said that you were coming from arizona. Make sure that you have the correct tires, winsheild washer fluid, ect. on you car. The type of tires ect. in Arizona are different for the different climate.
On housing, if you don't want to spend too much, and want to live in-town, I sudgest the North side. Although some people may say that side of town may be "on the wrong side of the tracks" it really isn't. True, some parts may not be perfect, but you can still find parts that have good people, good attitude and nice 90+ year old houses.
Trains are really annoying. Many train tacks in some areas of town.
Springfield also has many fine private Catholic and Lutherine schools (elementary and high-school)
