I'm glad somebody on this forum gets it. Thank you for the clarification.

Basic economics: you can't have a monopoly when there's a lot of competition. I'm struggling to recall the last time I shopped at Kroger. And while the big boxes may not be solely grocers, fact is they provide competition. Besides, Jewel and Dominick's are no different than Marsh in that they are local chains. Kroger is more national.
Kroger is not national. As a matter of fact prior to coming here, I hadn't seen a Kroger store since I was a kid (in the 60's) and I assumed that they had gone out of business. The fact that you can't recall the last time you've seen one does not invalidate my experience, since no one on this forum can name another dedicated grocery store in Indy other than Marsh. When I walked into Marsh it is so similar to Kroger, (identical layout, food and prices, etc.) I immediately wondered if it were a subsidiary of Kroger.

As for Jewel and Dominicks, while they may be local chains neither has a monopoly. Unlike Indy, In Chicago and around all of it's surrounding suburbs there is a variety and abundance of grocery stores and specialty stores. Jewel, Dominicks and Ultra Foods just happen to be the largest dedicated grocery chains with the most locations.

I've heard of Safeway as I have a sister that lives in Arkansas. We have Whole Foods and Trader Joes in Chicago, but neither of them are general grocery stores. I just want to shop in a large store with more choices of meat and other items than little over priced Kroger.

Are the other stores you mentioned general grocery stores or small "mom and pop" stores?

Thank you!

Good Earth is more health-food than general grocery.

Saraga Intl Market is Asian, African, Carribean, Latin American, and the Middle Eastern foods.

Safeway is a big chain like Kroger.

Actually, it's the largest grocer in the country and second only in volume to Walmart. They own regional grocery "brands" across the nation.

I said I cannot recall the last time I shopped at one, which should tell you that there's grocery competition in Indy and, hence, Kroger does not own a monopoly (although I do believe it owns the largest market share).
