Part of the task will simply be reminding people that opening their WiFi is the socially responsible thing to do,
F**k that liberal BS.

No, I carry a BB that can be tethered to my laptop if its for a task i can't do from the phone.

Even if we have data plans for our mobile phones, we've probably had these experience in cities or countries where our phones don't have coverage or don't have coverage for less-than-extortionate prices
Can't say that's happened to me. If I were traveling to another country and needed internet, I'd plan ahead. How the hell did people get along all these years before the internet?

The problem that's really killing open WiFi is the idea that an unlocked network is a security and privacy risk.
No, the problem is that we all pay our hard earned money for the internet service we receive, and most of us aren't willing to let others get a free ride.

the internet is a luxury, not a right. miss me with this bull****.

Here's one possible way:
1. Everyone with Wifi would have two routers - one for themselves and another for the public.
2. Public access would go through a proxy server. All users would need to register first and be given a user name/password.
3. Usage would be on a credit system. You get one hour of wifi for every hour that you provide the public. The more you share the more you can use while out on the road.
4. Those who are unable to share their own broadband would buy credits.

Anyone who commits a crime can be traced through their individual account.
I do not want to be, nor will I be a mini-ISP.

OMG, disconnected from your facebook for 10 minutes, a life ending catastrophe.

Sorry, I like free stuff as much as the next man, but opening wifi will only cause more people not to buy internet service, thereby raising prices for everyone else. I can easily imagine the rich guy not purchasing internet service if he can ride free on someone else's network

Don't even want to get into the security risks. There are people who will take advantage in any way, by stealing data or simply letting the guy next door paying for a service he uses.

Are we really so far gone that absence of internet is now a cause for worldwide panic? What are we the borg?

What's the purpose of open wireless? It would just lend itself to occupancy by freeloaders.

People need to disconnect from time to time, or you end up on the internet

So it's not for you.

If my system were put into use, it would practically eliminate the need for 3g/4g. The only thing you couldn't do is roam.

Best part is the cost. Free if you share your own connection.

If everyone had an open router, there would be no way the police could pinpoint you for crimes commited on your line.

We need new laws to protect those who would be generous enough to allow the public to use their broadband.

The benefits outweigh the risks.

Verizon doesn't cap FiOS and they say they never will.

But even if they did, I'm sure we could figure out a way to share the costs as welll. It would still be cheaper than 3G.

Wouldn't it be nice to know you can take your laptop or tablet with you and get online anywhere, without a huge 3G/4G bill?

An iPod Touch with Skype may be able to replace your cell phone at a fraction of the cost.

I'm sure we can find a way to take care of the freeloaders.

I tether with my cell phone. It's not that expensive. This type of thing has been implemented before. It never took off. Look up FON.
