How can we leave our wireless open and protect ourselves from abuse from law enforcement?
Here's one possible way:
1. Everyone with Wifi would have two routers - one for themselves and another for the public.
2. Public access would go through a proxy server. All users would need to register first and be given a user name/password.
3. Usage would be on a credit system. You get one hour of wifi for every hour that you provide the public. The more you share the more you can use while out on the road.
4. Those who are unable to share their own broadband would buy credits.
Anyone who commits a crime can be traced through their individual account.
I do not want to be, nor will I be a mini-ISP.

Sorry, I like free stuff as much as the next man, but opening wifi will only cause more people not to buy internet service, thereby raising prices for everyone else. I can easily imagine the rich guy not purchasing internet service if he can ride free on someone else's network
Don't even want to get into the security risks. There are people who will take advantage in any way, by stealing data or simply letting the guy next door paying for a service he uses.
Are we really so far gone that absence of internet is now a cause for worldwide panic? What are we the borg?

People need to disconnect from time to time, or you end up on the internet
Only a FOOL leaves their wireless open. So many illegal activities can be done by anyone through an open wireless, and there is absolutely nothing can be done to prove it was not the person leasing that IP address at the time. From kiddy porn to having the RIAA sue you for hundreds of thousands of dollars for music you didn't steal, at least not without spending 10's of thousands of dollars in legal fees.
If everyone had an open router, there would be no way the police could pinpoint you for crimes commited on your line.
We need new laws to protect those who would be generous enough to allow the public to use their broadband.
Then there is simple bandwidth consumption, every ISP I know of has a maximum monthly limit with either throttling or fee based consequences for exceeded.
Verizon doesn't cap FiOS and they say they never will.
But even if they did, I'm sure we could figure out a way to share the costs as welll. It would still be cheaper than 3G.
Wouldn't it be nice to know you can take your laptop or tablet with you and get online anywhere, without a huge 3G/4G bill?
An iPod Touch with Skype may be able to replace your cell phone at a fraction of the cost.
I'm sure we can find a way to take care of the freeloaders.
I tether with my cell phone. It's not that expensive. This type of thing has been implemented before. It never took off. Look up FON.
