I was born in Ohio, but now live in Jacksonville AND I'm a nurse. Okay, the weather here is hot and humid. I'm used to it though, because between OH and FL I lived in Texas. You might really not like the heat...but hey do you want the trade off because the winters here are mild in comparison! As for nursing salaries, they are generally LOW in comparison to other areas of the country (much lower than the salaries in Texas). If you have a specialty and/or years of experience or a higher education beyond an Associates Degree you might do better. I would say you could expect around $45-50K per year salary as an average ballpark figure.

I'd suggesting staying east of the river if you want to be near enough to the beaches. Seems like you're looking that way since you mentioned The Southside.

In the Southside region, you might want to check out the San Jose area, 32217. San Jose is very established, very safe and near everything. Big lots and big trees here.

I'd also recommend the Beauclerc area, zip 32257. It's just to the south of the San Jose area.

You didn't mention what price range you'll be looking at, so it's hard to recommend in much greater detail without knowing more specifics. I live in 32207 and I love it, but you don't get as much square footage for your money here. The desirability factor makes it one of the most costly areas per square foot, so a lot of us live in bungalows . Check out the zip though if you like established areas .

RedneckRebells -- I'm sure "Culture Shock" was not meant in a derogatory way. There are differences in social culture in all parts of the country. As a New Englander who's also lived in the Midwest, a couple of differences I've noticed here in Florida are that the pace of life is slower and there's more eye-to-eye contact with strangers as one walks through a store or along a sidewalk. When you're not used to those kinds of things, it takes time to get used to them. I think that's the "Culture Shock".
