Caterpillar recruits engineers, too. To work in their marketing department. Which means they need to drive to see clients.

Any organization that has a decent fleet and vehicle use policy and HR department working with them will have driver qualifications for anyone that drives. This is not suspect or unfair at all. Risk reduction and lowering the cost of operating vehicles includes selecting highly qualified drivers, and ensuring they are routinely run through a motor vehicle record (MVR) check.

Would seem to me a 7 year old moving violation is pretty minor. My company draws the line at an arrest, even if you were never convicted.

One of my besties lost a six figure a year job with Coca-Cola because her driving record was so horrific.

No DUIs but just horrible driving.

It was a shame as she was amazing at her job.

The wreck that finally cost her the position with Coke, the woman she rear ended filed a massive suit against Coke. Her attorneys said that Coke willingly employed her and gave her a company car knowing her driving record.

I guarantee you that we would not hire engineers with a negative driving record. That applies to many other positions, too, if they are required to drive a company vehicle even periodically. Here those records are kept only for 5 years, though alcohol related and Vehicular Assault/Vehicular Homicide convictions are kept 99 years.

You don't have to be a "driver" to need to drive for work. In government there are training seminars now and that and frankly not everything is at a bus or rail stop. I've personally seen countless times that a drivers license and reliable transportation are required.

It could be a requirement of the company's insurance issuer.

Heck, while in college, I worked in an oil change shop, and a decent driving record was a requirement. It had EVERYTHING to do with insurance.

Now that there are 5 million more legal workers in America, you will likely see more of this.

Enjoy!
Yes, that flood of undocumented workers now applying for engineering positions.
