Well, it's "semi" official.

The KC metro is now over 2,002,047 people as of July 2008.

I think our MSA is a bit silly as it includes far away counties with very little population while not including Douglas, KS which is much closer. Cities comparable to Lawrence near every other MSA are included in their respective CMSA, but Lawrence just refuses to be grouped with KC for some reason.

Regardless of how you look at it though, the KC area has over 2 million people now. It’s actually closer to 2.1 or 2.2 if you include Lawrence. If you include St Joe in our CMSA, it goes to 2.3 million. The only reason I would include Lawrence and St Joe is to fairly compare metro KC to other metro population stats which do tend to include cities like Lawrence and St Joe in their CMSA stats.

I don't know how the recent census change in KCMO's population affects this number either. KCMO's 2007 population was recently changed from 448,000 to 475,000 by the census and that change doesn't appear to show up in the MSA stats.

I don't know how they determine what is part of the metro.... Lawrence I could see being considered part of it.

St. Joe tho... i dunno, it just doesn't seem like part of KC to me. It's about an hour from downtown.. so to include it would be like including Topeka.... it's weird cuz they are bigger cities that are very close... but I don't personally feel like they are part of KC.

I completely agree, but when you look at Denver, Indy, Cincy, Cleveland etc, those CMSA stats include cities like Lawrence and St Joe.

I’m not talking MSA, but CMSA. I just want KC to compare in a fair way to other markets. It’s silly to include Greeley in Denver or Middletown in Cincy and not Lawrence in KC.

Lawrence should be included in the KC CMSA. St. Joseph should not be included because it CONTINUES to be a solid stand alone city that is somewhat less connected to the metro area. The Census Bureau lists St. Joseph as a separate metro area. I do disagree with the premonition that Lawrence should be grouped seperately. The counties I feel that the Census Bureau should eliminate from the KC CMSA are: Caldwell, Bates, and Linn.

Now that is true, if those are included in the CMSA, then no it doesn't make since not to include ST. Joe and even Topeka at that point possibly? They are within the same distance of KC that Greely is to Denver.

Topeka has its own media market. It is not even remotely connected with Kansas City. That would be like implying that Chicago should include South Bend, IN in its metro area.

well i don't know how this is calculated.... i was just going by the distance from KC.. if people are considering anything within an hour of a city, etc.

I am sure they have forumulas based on commuting patterns. However, I think more people commute from St. Joseph, MO to the KC metro even compared with Topeka. Many people who live in Lawrence commute to Topeka or KC because it is in between the two cities.

Technically, St. Joe has its own media market. It sort of lies within the Kansas City Market. St. Joe has an ABC affiliate. Probably a good thing because the ad rates are cheaper. They must be if a local used car lot can run a commercial during "Lost"... Probably not feasable in on KMBC in Kansas City.

How far do these TV stations transmit?
