My husband and I (60ish and retired) currently live in a very nice condo in Independence missouri looking to find a nice small town near this area to buy a house...Any recommendations....we want a small town experience with moving too far out into the boonies...thanks.

If you want to stay relatively close to where you are now, then you might look at Grain Valley or Pleasant Hill. Although both are becoming more suburban than small town, (especially Grain Valley), they still maintain a small town culture.

Pleasant Hill, Greenwood, Harrisonville, Parkville, Platte City. Don't know what you mean by 'too far out in the boonies' but all of these are close enough that, to me, they are suburbs and more or less resemble them both in architecture and citizenry. I don't think you get truly a 'small town feel' until you get far enough away that it's too far for former city people to move there and commute to work in metro KC. People are what gives any town, large or small, its 'feel' and in places that are close enough to commute, you will be living with a lot of other former big-city people.

Pleasant Hill is the strangest place I have ever been in my life. I feel like I am visiting a foreign country when I go there. Very strange place.

The NWS forecast office is there, though

How about Lexington. It is a small town setting, but not too far from the suburbs.

Kearney is worth checking out. It is about 15 minutes north of Liberty and is a small town yet a reasonable distance to the city/

Lexington is a very old, historical town. Neat place, and only half an hour or so from Independence. Love the architecture.

I haven't been to Kearney, but used to know someone whose parents moved there since they were looking for the same things you described. There were a few real estate options that popped up there that didn't look all that bad either when I was researching before getting my house as well.

Be aware that Kearney is in the I-35 sprawl corridor that extends out of KC. Kearney will not be a rural town for much longer. The further removed from the interstate you go the more likely a town will stay rural away from the KC metro.
