My husband and I are comtemplating a permanent move to Kentucky. We lived in Monticello for 7 months, and had to return home(Colorado) due to illness in the family. We found the people to be very friendly, and loved the trees and rain. We are old folks( I still work) and love hiking. No children to consider(all grown up.) Just want to find a few acres of woods within an hour or two of shopping/entertainment. We enjoy spending our time out in the woods, in the garden or behind the stove. So, to all of you great Kentuckians, if you could live anywhere in the state, where would you live? Thanks for your help! From the Colorado Mangy Moose...

Oh man, it just depends on what you want. You like the woods, so you want rural? I would live somewhere between Louisville and Lexington. The US 60 corridor is beautiful IMO. How about Shelby County?

I agree with stx12499. Louisville is a great place to live with lots of good restaurants, Broadway shows and shopping. Yet you have beautiful woodlands to the south, east, north (Indiana) and west. Florence is nice also, there you are close to Cincinnatti. I lived in Louisville and regrett the day we left...

Taylorsville Lake is a very nice area and you can easily find a very nice house halfway between the lake and the city.

Are these areas within an hour of major shopping? I know Huntington has some decent stuff, but when people say they want "country" but within an hour of major shopping, I always steer them towards the Louisville-Lexington corridor. NKY is great too, but is really more like Ohio.

Cave Run, KY
I presently live in Ashland,Ky. If I could move anywhere in KY it would be near Cave Run Lake in Daniel Boone National Park. The views are breathtaking, wildlife everywhere you turn, and great fishing!

I could not agree more, I love the stretch in eastern Jefferson county through Shelby county. Currently I live in Laurel County, but if I ever move back to the Louisville area, I would take a a hard look at the following areas: MIddletown, Shelbyville (especially off the second I 64 East exit), and perhaps Spencer County near Taylorsville. All of these are beautiful country areas, but within a 45 minute drive to Louisville.

Agree 100%. That's where my family is looking at relocating. We also like E-Town and La Grange.
