I remember back when I was still in school there were talks of making The Strip area more pedestrian friendly... possibly by taking one lane of traffic away on each side, more landscaping, etc. Has anything progressed with that? Or does the fact that it's designated a U.S. highway create some problems? Are businesses still moving in and out like crazy like when I was there (99-04)? What's this economy done to the area?

Yes, I know I could google it, but I would like to hear what the locals know and think.

I guess I'm just getting nostalgic because I'm about to start school again and I remember spending lots of time on The Strip.

(P.S. I do have to say that the scenery architecture-wise at UT definitely beats out where I'm going now -University of Illinois Chicago )

The Strip is still struggling. The same turnover establishments are still turning over and the same strong ones are still there (Copper Cellar, etc.). The layout is almost exactly the same as when I went to UT back in the '80's! It is still 4 lanes and McDonalds, Krystal and OCI are still there. Mellow Mushroom is there now - I think it was there when you were here? Jimmy John's is there as is Panera.

Come visit your old home!

Chicago Pizza is there! It's the only place I've been to on The Strip.

oh Chicago Pizza? hmm... Is Stefano's still there? They had my favorite pizza.

Yes Mellow Mushroom was there when I was there ... I think it opened in '04?

I see nothing has happened in the planning arena for making it more of an attractive area (you have to admit, it's not the prettiest street ).

I do want to come visit ... I haven't been back there since March '07, before I moved to Chicago. I just don't have the funds/time right now.

Yep, still ugly and still not pedestrian friendly. The city planners and UT are still missing a bet on making that a destination with a specific look, parking, and bringing in lots more foot traffic. Been that way since I was a kid. {Sigh}

I'm actually going back to school for urban planning, that's another reason why I'm interested in it. (I'll be focusing in transportation/transit though. )

I dunno-- there's something rather comforting in it staying the same. Kinda reinforces the theme that sometimes you really can go home and still recognize it.

The Strip has worked for generations, and Knoxville isn't known for revitalizing areas to successfully mesh the charm of the old with the functionality of the new. Maybe it's better to leave it than to screw it up. They'd probably do away with landmarks like Stefano's, which still has the best whole wheat pizza anywhere!

Is there a place called Chicago Pizza? I meant Stefano's. Whoops!

I agree with GBH. it isn't all THAT ugly and it looks alive. Vital. There is much to be said for leaving things alone that work.
