When we lived in the area, it snowed every year. One year there was a lot of snow and very cold temps. I can`t remember if this was the same storm or not but we had a lot of ice and dh couldn`t go to work. We were all homebound for a week. At that time, a lot of people couldn`t get to work because of the ice. That was the only time I remember the ice being that bad. When we moved, it seemed like the snow wasn`t coming like it use to. One of dhs co-workers told him that the snow seemed to be the thing of the past. Sound like it`s back now.

It is back, if you consider receiving two inches of snow one day that melted by 3 p.m. the same day, or that we received about 1/2 to one inch from this storm.

So normally in the winter months, do the roads get icey much, that causes a problem driving? I am very fearful of icey roads. I moved from Boise, ID after sliding through a couple stop signs!! I wouldn't go out after dark in the winter because it was always icey.

Yes, Bufford. As TN typically doesn't consistently get a whole lot of snow, there isn't a whole lot of money spent by the state/cities/towns on road clearing equipment and road treatment. There is also the issue of people not having the long time/every year experience of driving in winter conditions and don't know how to adjust their reactions. That is no ones fault, just one of those things that if you don't practice a lot it is hard to do in a split second decision making situation. So we do get icy roads that take a while to get cleared off enough to be safe to drive on. Today hubby and I are sitting here at home...not at work, because we live on a hill that is not on a main road. We have watched 2 neighbors try and try to get up the hill and couldn't, had to walk up the hill. We also watched 3 who made it down...fast and sideways. But it really isn't that big of an issue because most everything just closes up when we have real winter weather. Everyone just stays put for the most part until it is over and gone, which also usually isn't long.

The main roads are treated with salt brine, and now Beet juice, in advance of snowfall and cleared pretty efficiently when it does snow an appreciable amount, which it hasn't done in recent years. Back roads though require caution.

The main roads have all been cleared courtesy of the city, the condition of the side roads today depends on the amount of shade/sun they recieve. Also what direction they slope. There's a lot to be said for solar heating.

Our hill was treacherous, last night. We had two cars that were left just to the side of the road, but still blocking on both sides. My husband, the Florida boy, the man that never drove in snow, made it up the hill, in-between them and with bad tires, to boot.

We had to help a lot of people up the hill, last night. Me, I zip around in it now. It's easier down here because the people don't drive like nuts. They used to scare me, up north.

Anyway, we live on a secondary road. Just the little Leave It To Beaver Neighborhood. Well, it was treated and driveable at 7:30 this morning. Thank you, City of Knoxville. You rock!

These snow and ice events are so rare that it isn't a concern.

The ice and snow storm was probably the 1993 storm. It was called The Storm of The Century. It was a once in a lifetime event that affected a good portion of the country. It is brought up in almost every weather thread.

No matter where you live, people think their weather is the most extreme. It's the least extreme place I have ever lived.

People like to over exaggerate the winters here. You may have to handle icy roads once every couple of years, usually for 1-2 days. I would estimate that icy roads probably occur once for every 6-7 times in Boise. Ask the Michigan transplants about the difficulty of the winters here

Let's put it this way, where I live we've got at least 10-11 inches more snow than you in the past couple weeks, and I've had no trouble at all navigating any parts of this little city an hour northeast of Knoxville.

Of course, if you live out in the boonies, yes there will of course be more rough conditions year round - in the winter that means ice and snow on the roads there.
