I really don't care about politics and I wouldn't try to change anything, because like I said...I don't care. All I want is to live comfortably where I don't have to worry about how am I going to pay my ridiculously high rent. I want to buy a house and pay mortgage that I can afford. My husband is a paramedic for the FDNY and my uncle said that he could get him a job as a paramedic in Las Vegas. I don't care about politics, I just want to be happy and for my family to be happy. I don't need to live in a place that has the same political beliefs as NY because that's not what it's about for me.

And no one has answered my questions. All I want to know is if the school systems are good and what neighborhoods in Las Vegas would be a good place to raise a family. That's all I want to know.

Schools are pretty crummy, with the occasional bright spot. I don't have kids so I haven't paid all that much attention. If you look at houses on zillow they give a list of nearby schools with ratings - you'll need to decide if the ratings are meaningful though.

Ignore the political dbaggery - people who get so caught up in us-vs-them politics believe that everybody is as tribal as they are.

The school district is troubled, to say the least. Look into the magnet schools if you decide to make the move.

I spent a lot of time in San Diego for work. Driving there sucks, and they have some crazy crime, but overall, I'd recommend it over Vegas.

First you need to visit here and I do not mean the strip. Stay at one of the local Station casinos rent a car and drive around using a GPS. You best bet is to have a good real estate agent lined up to show you the different areas to live and etc.

The second thing is schools well I have no children here (retired) but their is enough threads and post on here guide you along. I have no dog in that fight. I moved here last October from NYS and you are correct about the cost of living it is about 1/2 of what it is in NYS. My pro vs con list on moving here to LV the Pro's won. I have yet meet a person from NYS who regretted moving here children or no children. Just keep in mind the cost of living is going to keep going up in NYS it is a endless tax, fee grabbing money pit with no bottom and more laws which makes it a super Nanny state. Good Luck

Agreed. Wife and I moved here from VT primarily due to the lack of opportunity, weather and the bats#it crazy liberal politics driving the cost of living up and up and up. My oldest sister's youngest daughter graduated from High School this year. My sister and her husband were out of there two weeks later - bought a nice little condo in a beautiful area in Knoxville, TN where they are retiring to. My other sister plans to leave VT as well. If my Dad did not have a serious girlfriend I believe he would sell his house and move as well (and he's 75!).

One great thing about Las Vegas is it's cheap to fly to and hotel rooms are cheap and plentiful. Take a long weekend and as Irish says get a rental car w/GPS and cruise around the city (away from the strip) and see what it's like. San Diego is a 4 1/2 to 5 hr drive away (if you are careful about the traffic) so, you may be able to swing down there and check it out on the same trip.

Bottom line there is no way to know if a city is right for YOU until you set foot on the ground and see it for yourself.

I relocated my family to the Las Vegas area and everyone is doing fine. The school district here is over 300K students, so as a whole the numbers are bad. But there are gems in the rough here, you need to find the desirable areas and the schools will equal or even surpass dare I say a Long Island school. My child has been more challenged here than she was in NY, and the communication between the teachers and us has been suburb. Why would Las Vegas not be a good place to raise a family ? It is just like any other City of 2 million people. I find a lot of East coast arrogance ( mostly NY ) and Ignorance and it all starts with the media. Go visit, stay local and see for yourself, we are real people raising real family's.

I don't think I'd move to either place if I was bringing kids.
