If you are going to work with the NLVPD, your better bet would be to find a home in El Dorado, Aliante or any of the newer area's of North Las Vegas.
The southern part of Vegas will result in you being stuck in traffic a lot of the time. This valley is bigger than most people think.
Good luck.

That will not be an easy commute. I drive from Henderson to Clark County Detention Center and it can be a chore. If you take 15, good luck coming home. 15 is about to undergo so major surgery.

If at all possible, avoid I15. I live in the southeast part of town in Henderson, near the mountain, and my commute takes me on 95 northwest out of the city and into Nye country. I see where the traffic is and on 95 it's all heading northwest! If you live in the north you're screwed traffic-wise. I mostly hit 95S at around 6pm or so, heading southeast to the Lake Mead exit near the Fiesta casino and every now and then I am able to leave the cruise control untouched at 70mph from Indian Springs all the way to my LM exit. I see the headlights backup up on those poor folk heading north like sheep.

Most residents know to take surface streets and other side streets and not the freeways during rush hour. Most of those 'sheep' heading north are actually heading to Summerlin and parts past that.
We aren't 'screwed' living in the north, especially those of us that know how to get across town in a half hour, versus the hour or so it takes everyone else.
The place that has the most traffic is Henderson. And before anyone pooh-poohs that, I've been over there on weekdays and weekends. And in comparison to where I live in the new NLV, it's much easier over here.

Get your job first and then and only then find a place to live. Anyone tells you they can cross this valley in half an hour is not telling you the truth unless they have a helicopter.

Whether you sit still with your shifter in park on 15 or creep the side streets at 5 mph from red light to red light it's all the same. Choose your poison.

You can listen to us or you can take a few test runs on your own. See for yourself but bring food with you. You will miss dinner time.

Here is the funny part: When you write home to family telling them you seen more accidents in one day here, every day here and about 3 times a week you see a fatal with the orange blanket over the car, they just simply will not believe you. But only we know the truth. We see it every day with our own eyes.

Simply untrue. We have seen a grand total of one fatal accident in the last ten years. We have seen two or three others where we suspect there may have been fatalities. We see a fender bender somewhere or the other a couple of times a month...par for a big city.

I would agree that it is not a good idea to try and get across the city. Better to decide where you are working and live on the same side. It is possible to get around town quite fast if you can avoid the rushes..and I15. I also disagree the I95 is any big deal. Sinnce the new road you get a 3 minute glitch around Ann. It also takes 5 minutes to get through the Spaghetti Bowl in the rush...but again that is about it for regular congestion.

Oh no not you again. You seen one fatal accident in 10 years huh? It sure must be nice to be lucky enough to work at home and never have to negotiate these deadly roads.

Nevada AKA Las Vegas leads the country in traffic fatalities. Back in September the local news said that if not one more person died on Nevada's highways for the rest of the year, no other state would catch up to us. That very weekend back in September 6 more died on the roads.

I drive more miles per year then your cops do. I see it all. I see things I never seen before in any other parts of the country. Go take a look out there. There are more tire marks on the center cement divider then there are on the road. You can collect enough parts from wrecked cars along the road side to build another car. Locals laugh at this. Outsiders drop their jaw. Cops hide from it. Local Chamber of Commerce hides the real statisitcs for fear of chasing tourists away.

The only thing I find strange is most of these fatals are not due to drunk drivers as one might guess. Hmmmmm.

What happens in Vegas...shouldn't be an accident!

I don't think the point is what part of the valley has more traffic than another. And the point cartainly isn't how many fatalities occur on the roads either.

You want to limit the distance you have to travel from work to home if at all possible. Choosing to live on the south part of the valley when you work in the north requires a lot of sacrifice. Are you getting a great deal or are there some other circumstances? Otherwise, there's really no reason to do it. The newer housing is more or less all the same on all sides of town. The tracts in Southern Highlands or Mountain's Edge almost always have a twin in the north. The strip malls are almost identical as well, to the point where you get a feeling of deja vu when you visit a new part of town.

If you watch the ebb and flow of traffic, it acts like a tide that rises toward the strip from all sides in the morning and flows away from the strip in the evening. Crossing the entire length of the i-15 is no joy. I wouldn't want to do it twice a day. If you spend any time on the 215 on top of that, you could end up with a 45 minute one way commute most days. You may shave 5-10 minutes with some savvy shortcuts on surface streets, but it still doesn't compare with living on the same side of the valley as where you work.
