Town taxes are also part of it, I don't think any increase is occurring in the Town of Hempstead or Town of North Hempstead, but Venditto is raising taxes by 3-4%, so you will see an increase in Town taxes if your in the Town of Oyster Bay.
Mangano & Maragos are smart. The county borrowed at rates lower than AAA -- might as well take the free money while we still have the best rating around. By the time the loans are due, inflation will have reduced the debt by ~50%.

Not sure if it was just updated today or not, but Sulc did announce a slight reduction in the school district taxes. As I mentioned earlier, your county taxes next year will remain stable for the 7th time in the last 8 years, but Venditto is raising the TOB taxes again, so you will see an increase there.

NIFA doesn't seem to think so.

I don't know what you are looking at but here is mine for 2010 and for 2011. Granted I have 2 kids in the Massapequa school district, but this is NUTS!

A whopping $800 increase

ASSESSED VALUE Tax Rate per 100 of Assessed Value School Tax 1,211 555.54 $6,727.59

ASSESSED VALUE Tax Rate per 100 of Assessed Value School Tax 1,111 676.552 $7,516.49

Teachers salaries, benefits & pension costs account for 70% to 80% of all School Districts total budget. So...until School Boards address this with future contracts which must adjust salaries, benefits downward and pension plans to a type of 401 plan its all nonsense!

That's strange. Did your taxes go up last year? Mine went up about that much last year so I guess I paid my dues then (bad assessment) but this year corrected so that's one reason I may have no increase. Also are you factoring in the Star? and were there any taxable improvements done on your house?

The school taxes in Massapequa is higher than last year. What pequaman was referring to was that the tax increase was less than it was originally thought it was going to be.

Also one thing to keep in mind is the change in assessment compared to others in the district also figure into this.

You went from an assessed value of 1,211 for last years taxes, (which means a value of $484,000 in Jan of 08, and 1,111 for this years taxes (which means a value of $444,000 is Jan of 09). You had a $40,000 decrease in value (or about 8%) from Jan 08 to Jan 09, most homes decreased by a larger amount than that, so your increase in taxes % wise was actually more than increase in taxes in the district as a whole. If your home declined by more than most homes in the district, your increase in school taxes would have been less than the district as a whole.

Just looked up my parents old house in the Massapequa district. They went from an assessed value of $1,177 to $1,001 (or $470,000 to $400,400). So from a similar starting point as you, but a larger decrease in value. The increase in taxes (pre-star) was $235.

Very good post and info. That is true they did go up but it was one of the smallest increases in the county (about 2%).
I believe the energy savings were a huge factor in this. Nassau Schools should borrow cheap today and use govt grants where possible to go 100% renewable energy. That would be a step in the right direction and shield taxpayers from higher future energy costs. There's a private company that makes amazingly cheap panels today (~$.99/kw) I believe --

http://www.nanosolar.com/

and http://www.firstsolar.com/en/index.php (broken link)

if anybody from the district or county is reading this, they should look into those 2 companies.
