I look at a house today that was in Glen Cove... and it seemed very nice, but was the North Shore School District. It seems on here that the majority of complaints in Glen Cove is the school district... so do I have the best of both worlds? It's on Nassau Ave... if anyone knows that area, please comment. I welcome any information at all!

Also looked at a house on ***** Lane in Locust Valley. Now I read on here that there is a less desirable area in Locust Valley; does anyone know about ***** Lane? It seems that it is in the mailing address of Locust Valley, but the Village of Matinecock.

I know very little about this area of Long Island, but I like that it seems less congested than other areas of Nassau County. Any thoughts?

Are you certain that the house on Nassau Avenue is in the North Shore Central School District and not in the Glen Cove City School District?

Are you sure that ***** Lane is in the Village of Matinecock ("Locust Valley, NY 11560" mailing address) and not in the Hamlet of Locust Valley?

You can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) a house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that house's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP, or Census Designated Place, is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)

And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.

Can you also verify that the house is in the City of Glen Cove?

I ask because the Glen Cove School District is a city school district, supposedly meaning that all of the City of Glen Cove is within the borders of the Glen Cove City School District.

Also, the following map does not appear to show that any part of the City of Glen Cove is in the North Shore Central School District:

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the North Shore Central School District includes all or part of the Village of Sea Cliff, the Hamlet of Glen Head, the Village of Old Brookville, the Hamlet of Greenvale, the Village of Roslyn Harbor and the Hamlet of Glenwood Landing.

A map of the North Shore Central School District:

There is an area of Glen Cove that is in NSSD. The houses there are a good deal because NSSD is top rated. (I do not think that Glen Cove has a bad school district, but I would have to say the North Shore is better.

Interesting that you mention ***** Lane because my husband lived there until he was eleven. He has so many wonderful memories of ***** Lane - exploring in the adjacent woods, climbing trees and catching tad poles were some of his favorite things. His parents enjoyed the relative privacy yet it was a quick drive to Locust Valley village, and to Glen Cove.
This home is in another awesome school district - Locust Valley!

Locust Valley has a very upscale image, and for the most part it's true. LV is a WASPY preppy town.
As far as bad neighborhoods, Locust Valley does have one part of it that is a little dicey ( a dicey hood in Locust Valley - who knew?

This area can be found right off Forrest Avenue. If you are traveling West on Forrest towards Glen Cove. I have not been in LV for about three years but I doubt it has changed much... If it did change, I fear that it would be for the worse.
The area that I would avoid would be the high number Streets on the right while going west on Forrest. Thirteenth used to be the worst. The houses in this area are mostly small bungalow stile cottages, some muti family homes and few very derelict Colonials. They are all built very close together.
My guess is that they were never owner occupied and were build as investment properties. I happen to have an old catalog of early 19thC homes and there is a section about building houses for" the help"
I am just speculating here but that is my impression of that area.

As far as the other to places that you mentioned either seem nice, but ***** Lane is lovely and close to nature. But they are both in superb school districts.

If that house is 42 ***** Lane, a white American four square home my advice would be BUY IT!
This house is nothing like the "bad" area of Locust Valley.
Sure it's not a Gold Coat Estate, but it is a very desirable style of home that debuted in the late 18th Century in response to the excesses of Victorian era.
It's a style of home that is distinctly American.
Many Four Square homes were built through the 1930s Frequently but not always, these homes have fire places, built in cabinetry, or book shelves. May also had a stained glass window or two - one was at the bottom of the stair case.
Google" Four Square Homes" - I think you be in for a surprise! I think the price is good too.
There are web sites devoted to them

Are you referring to an area that is within the City of Glen Cove or an area outside of the City of Glen Cove that has a "Glen Cove, NY 11542" mailing address?

Does anyone know or have an opinion on whether Locust Valley is better or the same in ranking as the North Shore School district?
