How can a state like Texas have twice the number of students, a worse student to pupil ratio, a lot less libraries can show the same educational score as NY ????

I refuse to accept this study, I can only accept the survey/study/publication that shows NY to be better than the rest.
I mean cmon there are 50 elite students from a selected bunch of elite Long Island schools among 100 finalists for some science talent contest every year, if that doesn't prove that the average student on LI is better than the rest of the country then what will ?
Here's a little secret. The rest of the country could give two shakes about the Intel Finalists, they're busy preparing their kids for college and the real world.

Good post LOL. Actually the Intel program is a great way to get students involved in Math & Sciences but I think the publicity by some of these districts is a bit much. Some very talented students but it's really a slanted in many cases by resources, got to give a student from a place like Roosevelt a lot of credit. They still need to bring up the average/below average student.

To answer your question. The reason why we have one of the highest attendance ratings for college is because we have too many colleges. We have 66 SUNY campuses, 23 CUNY campuses, 3 of the top 10 largest private universities, and countless heartbeat/checkbook schools that will be happy to slap you with 80k worth of bankruptcy protected loans for an MA in basket weaving.
Oh, and ignore the fact that our unemployment numbers are greatly skewed by the fact that people are leaving NY in droves. So, they are now unemployed in another state instead of being unemployed in NY.
You, my friend, have the unenviable ability to ignore the complexities of rational thought in your desire to prove that your socialist agenda is justified. Stop taking data that has nothing to do with each other, slapping them together, and claiming peace in our time.
Oh, and ignore the fact that our unemployment numbers are greatly skewed by the fact that people are leaving NY in droves. So, they are now unemployed in another state instead of being unemployed in NY.

You sure do like throwing out bad stats. Adjusted for regional cost differences, NY is actually #4. Also, I don't think you want to argue SAT scores, because you'll soon find that highly-compensated districts in Nassau had high scores (EG, Jericho with 1779, Syosset with 1713, etc.), while the state average was brought down by NYC, where teacheres make considerably less (though I hesitate to corrolate same).

Yeah why would the country's third most populated state need more colleges? Students should have to fight each other with pugil sticks to get into school.

Please show that those leaving are the unemployed. I've seen the study (financied by a conservative anti-tax group), and it says that most people are leaving NYC for New Jersey (hardly a lower-taxed state - they are right behind NY) and Florida (retirees). It also showed that this pattern is slowing considerably.

You made the asinine statement that other states are more concerned with prepping kids for college and the real world, yet NY has more kids in college and mid-pack unemployment rates. You were wrong.

To top it off only around 71% of HS students will graduate, 3% below the national average. We hold the lowest rates for Black and Hispanic students going to college (ohh, we're not in the top 4 for going to college overall either). Another study has us below Miss. and Mass. (no split by race).
Our mid-pack unemployment doesn't help on the island when you have a 20%+ young adult population decrease.
Do you think the performance of long island schools are very good ? Some may be but all ?
Many do well, of course not all. And I've acknowledged that comparable districts elsewhere get equal results for less money. Things need to be done, but that doesn't include busting unions, scrapping pensions, or paying teachers like janitors.

You replied to NY #1 here in per pupil cost. So if you are talking about school performance how does that relate to Long island schools teachers salaries. So i guessed that since Long island teachers are not making good salaries and then how does the per pupil cost go up in NY. may be teachers outside of long island making more. An assumption.
