We moved off Long Island in 2006 to Waxhaw, North Carolina and after a job loss we came back north in 2009 and choose Northern New Jersey....been very happy ever since)
Very true. Myrtle Beach has so much to offer! I wish Long Island had half of what Myrtle had! There taxes are nothing, on a $200k house property taxes are about $300 a year!!
Yeah Atlanta was THE hotspot in the late '80s and early '90s...never hear about people moving there anymore....not sure why.
We are in the Raleigh area of NC. Not sure what difference it makes what is or is not right outside the area....personally I like seeing the rural areas. I think a lot of Long Islanders forget they are part of NY State - have you ever been upstate? I thought I would lose my mind once when we were driving up Rte 17 to Binghamton - even my 7 year old noticed we were the only car on either side of the road for about an hour!
To each his own. Some people really like the congested, living-on-top-of-each other with nowhere to go aspect of LI living - there's nothing wrong with that at all. I can see the appeal even. We just got sick of that and lots of other things.
They're moving to the suburbs of other metros - agree with most other posters here about which ones.
I've done the Myrtle drive... There's no highway for most of the trip coming from Western NC and you see some country for sure. I went to school in upstate NY and as twingles points out it's almost identical. In fact, I could blindfold you and drop you into the middle of NC and then the middle of NY - you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
I have cousins who moved to North carolina and they are both teachers. Then I have another set of cousins also in another part of North Carolina. Her husband is a hospital administrator and she teaches spin classes at a gym. They all have kids.

It's funny that you mention that. We used to go camping at North-South Lake Campground in the Catskills so I'm familiar with upstate New York. Whenever my husband and I drive to the dump here in NC we're reminded of upstate New York. The roads and surroundings are very similar. It's strange that a drive to a dump makes me miss camping in New York!!! A crazy part of me stills wants to go camping there (it's a really nice campground) but the rational part of me says it's way too long of a drive!
