Full time day care on LI runs you between 200 and $300 a week. Multiply $250 that by 40 weeks of the year (the time your kids are in school.) and you get $10K a year, so the average long Island tax bill pretty much adds up to what a day care bill would per kid.
Problem is that even if you don't have a kid in school you still have to pay it, and as in my case I have a kid in day care on top of having a tax bill.
Secondly, the teacher comparing teaching to baby sitting is doing a disservice to their profession by saying something so foolish, that teaching a class full of kids is equivalent to babysitting all of them. Get a grip. Are you wiping their butts and feeding them? I realize it's tiring to hear the constant teacher bashing that goes on on LI, but you don't help the situation by saying ridiculous things like that.
BTW, teachers are paid less than babysitters, and we teach your kids stuff, too!
I've tried to stay away from this controversy, even though my children have been out of public school for close to 20 years (hmmmmm ) and I still pay school taxes, but this statement is LUDICROUS!!!
The days of school teachers on Long Island being underpaid are WAY in the past!!
Yes, math, physics, chemistry, astronomy and earth science.
No, I am not a she
yes, sometimes classes are just like babysitting
No, I saw more kids with Lexus' than teachers
8181, sorry you don't have the nerve
no, I don't need benefits or pension if you give me a salary of $183,000 per year. I would purchase my own with that salary
No, I never complained, just did a simple comparative math problem
"from a 'teacher' of all people", Yes, and I am so sorry that I don't fit your vision of what a teacher should say and do
No, I am retired now
Yes, you all have learned something today, haven't you?

Too bad your "simple comparative math problem" was not in any way related to REALITY.
Uh huh, I learned how to really **** off the bank attorney at my re-fi closing by questioning all the numbers
There you go, nothing wrong with that. You are just the rebel that questions authority....I am proud of you. If you don't teach the kids that, they become sheeple.
I learned that several teachers of kindergarten in my district make well over $100K a year, which for less than 6 hours a day of work/180 days a year (but they never work 180 - they all take at least a few of their personal days) = over $100 an hour.
Please stop generalizing about the six hour day. First of all, My work schedule is 7:30am to 2:48pm. That is 7.25 hours in the building. I then work on average 1 to 2 hours a day Monday - Thursday (I don't do homework on Fridays) and about 3 to 4 on one of the weekend days. It takes a lot of time and money (that comes out of my pockets, not the taxpayer) to plan great lessons for my kids. Not to mention grading papers and all of the other paperwork required of us. I do all of this because I love my job and I want to see my students be successful. Just because you have run into lazy teachers who are looking for an easy paycheck does not mean that we all all like that.
From what I can see, a good number of teachers on this forum are greedy. Are they overpaid? Not the good ones. Are they underpaid? Definitely not on Long Island. Considering their average salaries are much higher than the average salaries on long island, and add in their benefits and all the days off, I think they have it pretty good. They should be thankful for what they get and realize that they have it a lot better than many others here.
