I used to work in and around the hamptons including places on dune road. During the prime months, homes rent for $40,000 or more per month.

Most of the homes being rented are NOT by famous people just wealthy ones. Most of the movie stars as you call them live north of the beaches or more towards east hampton.

I do the roundtrip drive every week. Definitely leave early in the morning. If you can't, wait until after morning rush hour, but whatever you do, get yourself onto Long Island by 1:30 PM. On a Friday, if you don't get past NYC and onto the Island by then, prepare to sit in A LOT of traffic.

Also, you will almost always hit traffic at at the Southampton/Water Mill border, and it will likely be stop and go until you get to Bridghampton. A short cut to avoid this:

[make a left off of Route 27 at 7 Ponds Road (in Southampton) and then left on Head of Pond Road to Scuttle Hole Road and a right on Mitchell straight into Bridghampton.]

Look at a map ahead of time as this route zigzags a bit.

Coming back, don't leave on Sunday if you can avoid it. If you have to leave Sunday, morning is a lot better than afternoon or evening.
