If you are "equal distance" to both that means you are likely in NJ....maybe Philly area - at any rate you aren't on LI which makes the commute a non-starter IMHO. Can't imagine fighting to get on LI any time I want to use my Hamptons house. Can't imagine even considering it, actually.

I could see a comparison between the Hamptons and the south of France, Malibu, the Costa del Sol, the Costa Esmeralda, Santa Barbara, etc. but not coastal Delaware.

The beaches, b&bs, hotels, resorts, restaurants, bars, shopping, sights, natural topography, people, culture, nightlife, marinas, boating, fishing, sports, variety of towns, air transportation, beach clubs, country clubs, etc. are better in the Hamptons than Dewey beach by orders of magnitude. No comparison really.

I still don't get what is so great about the hamptons. I've spent a day here and there out east and can't figure why people would sit in the traffic and spend the $$ to be there. I'm talking about the people who don't really have Hampton money but still go through the trouble to be out there.

Now, I took my family camping in Riverhead this weekend and we drove out to orient point. That was pretty nice. I loved the farms and farms stands. What a pretty area. We got lucky because with all the rain and the cool temps most people stayed away and there was no traffic at all. I wouldn't deal with traffic to here either though. But I did like it better than the hamptons.

Don't underestimate coastal Delaware; some of its individuals have a massive amount of wealth. I used to work for an attorney who has a client that lives on Rehoboth Beach in a $20 million home. Last I checked, coastal Delaware is the Hamptons for Washington, D.C's elite.

I'm always amazed that Main Beach in the Hamptons is on the top of the "world's most beautiful beaches" consistently. Just drive down to Smith's Point, pay your seven bucks to park and walk a mile in either direction. You have the place all to yourself, no annoying people, music, or smoke, and the beach there is just as beautiful.

You don't get it because the hamptons is for classy people. Commoners aren't likely to get it.

True, many of the aristocracy of Delaware and DC vacation in Rehoboth and Dewey but linking this area and the Hamptons is quite far reaching. I see little, if any comparison. You have a better shot with something like Stone Harbor or Bethany and even that is a stretch.

i like Montauk. On the drive east, it always seems that the Hamptons filters out all the a-holes, and thankfully they stay there. By the time I reach the Napeague strip, all the rich snobs with their Land Rovers are west of me.

Uh, in case you haven't been out there lately or following things, that has changed in recent years. Montauk is now the hipster capital and home of most of the trendy nightlife on the east end. Things are sleepy back in East Hampton by comparison.
