Had to get this off my chest because I'm seriously annoyed. I guess contractors are plenty busy post-Sandy! I had one contractor who's supposed to be 'one of the best in town' come by my house to give an estimate for kitchen/bath/basement work. After spending two hours going through my house with a million subcontractors, I was told I would get an estimate in about two weeks. Then a week later, I get a curt email that he just accepted some 'big jobs' and can't do anything until next year. I was annoyed, but emailed back asking if I would still get an estimate. Crickets.

Business may be good now, but it won't last forever. I've got a good mind to email back and tell him off, but eh, what's the point? He'll probably blacklist me with all his contractor buddies in town. Just pretty unprofessional way to treat a potential client to me.

It could have been worse, he could have given you an estimate, signed on for the job but then taken forever because he was too busy. be glad he was honest about not being able to get to it up front rather than after the fact.

I have found that, as a group, contractors are not very good business people. When I am having a job done I usually call about 8 of them. Of those, about half will call back and of those about half will show up.

I wonder what all these contractors will be doing a year from now? As the OP said, everyone's busy with Sandy work, but that'll soon come to an end.

Some are going to be busy fixing the short sale houses people are buying!

When homeowners can't afford to keep their home, maintenance and repair issues often go by the wayside as well

Wait a minute!? Wouldn't it make sense to name the contractor so we know who it is? This thread is kind of useless without it.

No, I'm sorry. Please do not mention the name of anyone , no matter how deserved , as this would be considered libelous because the person is not in a position to defend himself. You might have people DM you for the name, though.

At least he had the common sense and the common courtesy to call you back. What if he didnt call back ; you would still be wondering about it.

Contractors in every state are always difficult. We are trying to get a driveway done and called maybe 10 companies, three called back to say they didnt work in the area, four came and gave estimates and the other 3 ; still waiting.
