If you had to live in Riverhead, which are the nicer areas?

Thanks,

Default For those who may not be familiar with Riverhead

For those who may not be familiar with Riverhead:

Riverhead is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Riverhead, in the northeast part of Suffolk County, along the Riverhead/Southampton town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Riverhead in the Town of Riverhead is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Northville and the Hamlet of Aquebogue; on the south by the Hamlet of Riverside in the Town of Southampton (the Riverhead/Southampton Town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of Calverton and the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow.

The Hamlet of Riverhead has a different border than does the "Riverhead, NY 11901" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Riverhead, NY 11901" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Riverhead): places that have a "Riverhead, NY 11901" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Riverhead are in the Hamlet of Northampton, the Hamlet of Riverside and the Hamlet of Flanders in the Town of Southampton, as well as in the Hamlet of Baiting Hollow and the Hamlet of Northville in the Town of Riverhead.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

I'd opt for north of Sound Ave.

Default Aquebogue

we live in Aquebogue. we love it. the farms and close to the vineyards on one side, yet we are less tha 2 miles from the stores in Riverhead. A great convience of country and city life.

the only inconvience are the schools. Aquebogue elementary is great, but it only goes up to 4th grade. the remainder of Riverhead schools are not so good. There are a few other options. there is a local Lutheran School in Aquebogue. Two Catholic Schools; one in Riverhead- St Isidora and Cutchogue (10 minutes east) - Our Lady of Mercy. OLM is where our daughter went and she loved it. The high school - Mercy High - is in Riverhead (this is more local).

The downside is: we live is a home that is 2500 sq.ft., 5 years old, and our taxes (with the STAR program) are $11,000.00 and no rural mail delivery. (you can either use a PO Box or have delivery to your home in Aquebogue, but then your address becomes a less desireable Riverhead address.)

any further questions please ask. we are happy to help.

I'd have to disagree and say that the Riley Ave School in Calverton is superior to the Aquebogue Elementary School. We're in Riverhead, but not in either of those districts, so I have no self-interst in saying so. Actually, we're literally around the corner from the Aquebogue district line. Me, personally, I'm not happy with any of the schools in Riverhead (but for pre-school) though I think some of it depends on your needs. FWIW, our taxes our $4800/year, but I guess that's a fair trade-off for a "less-desireable" Riverhead address

I think the original poster has moved on, but I did want to reply to your post. I, too, would be happy to answer any other questions. It might help if the original question were clarified: What are you looking for? What is a "nicer" area to you? Why is the question phrased "if you had to live in Riverhead..."?

Just to clarify the last post. Riley Avenue is NOT in Calverton, but in Baiting Hollow which is a few miles southeast of Calverton. There is no Aquebogue district line. Anyone who lives in Aquebogue or Jamesport attends Riverhead Schools. I am renting in Jamesport right know and our kids are in Riverhead schools. Just in case anyone doesn't want Riverhead schools then don't live in Aquebogue or Jamesport or any other Riverhead township (Calverton, Baiting Hollow, Flanders).

I didn't use the proper terminology, I'm sorry. In the Riverhead school district there are four public elementary schools: Riley, Philips, Aquebogue, and Roanoke. There is also the Riverhead Charter School. I guess it's called a boundary between elemenary schools; I apologize for my misuse of the word district.

Riley, indeed, is in Calverton. See its website:
Our schools

The first paragraph on the site:

Riley Avenue is one of four K-4 elementary schools in the district. Riley was recently renovated and expanded and now houses 600 students. It is located on Riley Avenue in the community of Calverton. Riley Avenue School is the most rural of the Riverhead schools--but no longer surrounded by fields. It's a short one mile hike from the L.I. Sound.

Its address, per its site:

Riley Avenue School
Riley Avenue
Calverton, NY 11933
Ph: 631.369.6804

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Aquebogue in the Town of Riverhead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet Northville; on the east by the Hamlet of Jamesport; on the south by the Great Peconic Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Riverhead.
