THAT is a huge factor for LI happiness, in my opinion. My disappointment with LI did drop some when I stopped commuting to Manhattan.

I am just tied to my history hear, family, friends and job. I also like the fact that I can be in NYC in an hour or Montauk in a couple of hours, so the best of both worlds based on how I feel that day. I hate the beach but, I do like it in the winter to walk on the boardwalk. I like that i can get Chinese food, bagels, pizza, groceries, anything in a 5 minute drive or less. Overall, it is a beautiful place if you just get rid of most of the arrogant people that live here. That said, I have gone to Montauk three times in my life, rarely ever go to NYC or the beach, even in the winter. I think i just like knowing that the option is there. For that option, I am getting ripped off on taxes, house value, and everything else. If I moved, I would want most of the conveniences I have now, especially good hospitals and healthcare, but mostly everyone I know who escaped the island said they they haven’t found such a place.

This kind of sums up the frustration. By the time we weigh all the love/hate factors and pay all the bills, we're too tired to move anywhere!

The only frozen pizza worthwhile is Trader Joe's... the supreme pizza version. Worth every bit of the $5 and pretty much the only reason I would go in there. Way better than DiGiorno's.

My kids are early 20's and their job situation was hurt by the pandemic so they are not able to pay for their own housing currently.

Eventually before I get put in the ground I would like to leave here and go to a cheaper, less populated area. I am self employed with no pension and would like to go to an area where my savings would go a bit farther.
This is why it's important for us to break the cycle and move now - we don't want our kids coming back here and doing the same thing we did which is the easy way out going back because of comfort/familiarity. The cost is simply ridiculous regardless of how much we make. If we move them while young, they have plenty of time to establish their own friends/roots.

"Worth" it? Nothing IMO. It's just not financially feasible for the average person. It's beautiful and has a lot of check-marks in the "plus" column, but the cost of living, to me, simply is not worth it. Just my opinion of course.

Wether it’s worth it or not is to be debated. You can either afford it or you can’t.

But tell me where else you have nyc, beaches, wineries, safe neighborhoods, good paying jobs, boating, parks, etc at your fingertips.

I came back for work. Originally grew up here.

But no way I'm retiring here.

There are so many nicer places in this country, never mind the world where you money also goes much further.

People on LI are generally rude. Terrible at driving. Social circles are closed due to so many being here for generations. They grew up with their circle of friends and aren't nearly as open to opening up to outsiders as people are on other places. Roads are too small. Infrastructure is dated and ugly. North shore is full of snobs. Taxes are too high.

Infrastructure on LI is beyond horrible / i'll give you that. Roads are small- dangerous. Taxes are ridiculously high.
