I grew up taking the Port Jefferson line from Smithtown. The double decker trains are nice, but I feel like it takes way too long to get to Penn station. Ronkonkoma is a little bit east of Smithtown and still gets in faster.

I remember the old diesel cars. Those were awful. The double deckers are much nicer.

The ones they still used in the mid-90s? Those were awful. They dated back to the '50s and were horribly dirty. I went to Stony Brook and took those trains out there. Ugh. I once tripped on the little platform between the outside and inside doors and my knees went black.

.......but , they were roomy and comfortable. Not like those cramped seats that they have now (which are made in Japan for slimmer people than most of Long Islanders are , I'm afraid).

Default those darn narrow seats

So what's the lesser of two evils? The too narrow seats for us "pleasantly plump" long islanders or benches where folks take it upon themselves to use it as their personal baggage space. We can't win. You're either squashed into a seat or you have to find a seat that isn't occupied by a bag. Oy vey! Such is the life a a commuter. I'm not complaining, I just had to put my two cents into this thread.
