something happened last night with an AMTRAK train....these things happen. LIRR is a ripoff but I can't quibble with the service over the last few months.
Heck yeah! Multi hour r/t commutes get old quickly, shorten your life span, and generally make you a miserable person w/in a few years. I know MANY examples

You've got that right, I thought I was the only one! I used to be a nice person and now I am cranky all the time!
Honestly, service on the Babylon Branch has been really good for awhile (I'm jinxing myself now, I'm sure). The winter was fine. This morning was the first time in ages we've had an issue - the AMTRAK derailment near Penn cut down on the number of tracks they could use, so our train terminated in Jamaica. I'm not a big flag-waver of the LIRR and especially the recent fare hike, but it's been better than it had been.

Agreed, I can count on 1 hand the delays over 10 minutes in the last year or so on the Babylon Branch. Lucky I guess.

I took the train from Smithtown to Penn station for my student teaching a couple years ago. I hated it. With all the delays I experienced, I swore I would never rely on the LIRR for any commute I take. The only good thing about it is that you can sleep and do work to/from work. Otherwise, I just enjoy using it when going into the city.
