Hey everybody, my girlfriend and I are leaving for LA on the 30th. She got a job offer that she can't pass up.

We both have been in Philly for 5 years. I am comfortably with iffy neighborhoods, drunks, and bums, she can handle them okay but is used to better neighborhoods.

I would love to move to a neighborhood that would keep her commute as short as possible. At first I was looking at Maywood but the crime rate seems a bit high there.

I am ghost white and she is half mexican. In Philly our neighborhoods are very racially divided and it makes me wonder if we'd be targeted in Mexican neighborhoods similarly to here in black neighborhoods (not racist, it's just a fact of life. Same applies to white neighborhoods when you're a minority).

ANYWAYS... any ideas? I am also considering Downtown, Monterey Park, Leimert park.

Final thoughts: I love to bike and would love to be within a 1 hour ride to the beach. I also love punk and would like to get in to the backyard mexican punk scene happening in east LA right now (gf can stay at home for that one).

i would say downtown LA would easily be your best option. the bike ride is about an hour to the beach if you hit a lot of green lights. there's also a light rail line opening in a few months that will get you 2/3rds of the way there without having to pedal. i'm not sure of the east la punk scene, but plenty of punk bands still play in LA. i haven't been to a show in a few years, but they are all over the city and the region i.e. hollywood, orange county, long beach, the valley, south bay, pomona, etc...

Thanks. Downtown looks pretty cool to me

very excited about that rail line. I can't afford a car so I'm going to be taking public transit if I can't get a job near hers

Any opinion on Leimert park?
