Actually, regulations are exactly the reason why housing is cheaper in Texas. Texas law prohibits the willy-nilly refinancing and speculating that actually drove the real estate bubble; in TX, the total amount of debt on a home cannot exceed 80 percent of its appraised value, and any proceeds cannot be used to pay off other debts. Texas also has higher real estate taxes than California, which helped discourage rampant speculation.

That's the irony that people often miss: in Texas, that bastion of small government, regulations and taxes have helped keep housing affordable. Meanwhile, deregulation in supposedly nanny-state California has driven up home prices.

In 2008, Obama got 43% of the votes in Houston so I doubt everyone there has the same viewpoint as the person you mentioned.

80k & a 1/2 COL vs. 43k? I can't blame you, that's hard to pass up.

Houston, unlike L.A., has an NFL team. Doesn't that make up for everything else???

No:

1) L.A. will have a new stadium and team, and

2) team or no team, it's still Texas.

What's weird is, the OP mentions moving to Houston for a job opportunity making double his salary, he thinks the people are terrible yet calls this improved "quality of life"! OP, your salary has increased and your rent is cheaper but, that doesn't equate to a higher quality of life imo
Then to make things more permanent you're buying a 3000+ sq foot home to be rooted even deeper in Houston. Why do people do this? it sounds bassackwards if your happiness is compromised.
I think it becomes an entirely different calculation when kids become involved. As a parent you try to balance your own desires and interests with what is best for your kids. And therein lies the rub, sometimes you sacrifice your own immediate happiness for the sake of delayed gratification--being a "grownup."

Or looking for welfare $$$ generated by having kids. Not so "grownup."

Yeah there is definately a lot of that ... people getting welfare $$$ for kids. It would be a lot cheaper to just give people $$$ not to have kids!

I think the OP is smart and being responsible by living in Texas and being able to provide better for his family. It sounds like your lifestyle is much better in Texas. Even though you are spending most of your time working, being able to go out to eat and not worry about it is definitely nice.

I am still considering moving out of L.A too, and Texas is one of the states I have thought about. I don't have kids now, but I really don't think L.A is too great a place to raise kids. Schools are bad, etc. If you have tons of money and you can afford a gated mansion in the best area and private schools that's a different story.

Houston, unlike LA, paid through the nose with taxpayer money to build a stadium and lure a NFL team. LA's stadium will be privately funded and the public won't get fleeced like citizens of Houston did.

That makes all the difference.

That's what they've been saying for years. Kind of like still waiting to hear from Jimmy Hoffa.
