I know that pasadena is a nice town...can anyone recommend towns slightly to the east of there where you can get a nice 1 bedroom apartment for $1500 or less?

There are many very nice cities you can look into. Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Covina, Glendora, Sierra Madre, Aracadia. Even towns, Diamond Car, Walnut, and places like north Pomona, north Temple City, parts of Monrovia. Other areas are mixed with some good areas and some not so good areas. You might want to avoid El Monte, Baldwin Park Pico Riviera parts of Pomona, parts of Montclair which is San Bern County. check Padmapper.com to see what rentals are going for.
