If you want hiking, then Topanga is the spot. World class hiking in a varity of terrain, Ocean views, City Views, Red Rocks, Pastures, Creeks, Oak Canopy, Wide fire roads, bushwacks, rock scrambles and everything in between.

I agree with previous poster that the main thing you want to do is live near the hills or mountains. There is plenty of traffic in Los Angeles, so if you are too far away, it will take you more time to get to that good hike. Over by hoping that the weather is a little better and you can get near the cool temperatures faster. However over by Monrovia or Pasadena there are plenty of great hikes and you just need to hike in the morning or evening but maybe not in the middle of the day during the summer. While the mountains aren't quite as tall, I also like the area down near Laguna Beach. Great temperatures and you probably can find something in your price range that is within 10-15 minutes of the coast and even closer to great hikes.
