I am visiting the area, from out of town, next week.. I am going to visit Lakewood and parts of Long Beach, to hopefully nail down a rental for my family.

Does anyone have any opinion on the more desirable/nicer areas of town? Any advice on areas to avoid or look into? Certain neighborhoods to stay away from? Any streets to stay on the other side of? Any schools or parks know as being less than desirable?

Any help is VERY appreciated! I only have one week to check out these areas and I can't afford to waste time looking in the wrong places!

Plus, this thread will help all the people considering the same general areas to move

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Ex-part-time-Lakewood guy here (granted it years ago, early 90s, in any case ... ). For my money I would target areas near the Country Club. I used to jog a route circling it, and those streets struck me as quintessential Lakewood. Great mid century vibe with good pride of ownership.

Would love to hear what you find / decide. In the back of my mind I have this dream of returning to Lakewood and buying a nice compact 2 or 3BR, 2 or 1-1/2 bath, mid century classic. Pre-retirement relo and if everything worked out maybe actual retirement eventually (and if not, a decent cash out when the time comes).

For Long Beach, you'll want to stay on the east side, preferably east of Lakewood Blvd. The Los Altos area near CSULB is nice for families, and the "home" elementary, middle school and high school are considered some of the best in the district. The Belmont Shore/Naples area is very nice too, close to the beaches, but pricey, and parking is an issue.
