I have also tried to live in Denver and Utah. And these places were both awful for various reasons.

Welcome to the "New America", where every place is an extreme, and every place is bizarre and hard to deal with in a different way.

Personally, when I get back to the US after being overseas, I will gladly live on a rural property somewhere and isolate myself from this strange society.
About your last sentence...Wanna live in rural isolation? Come to my neck of the country! After you enter you will hear big thunderous words saying "Welcome to your own piece of hell...Welcome to the rust belt!" Then you settle down kinda sit around til you get old and die. Gotta love the midwest! Come see us!
PS- And say goodbye to the sun if your coming here, it's virtually non-existent from November to May.

Yes, LA is a pit - that is why I left 30 years ago. I wouldn't live there if I was given a home in Beverly Hills.

As I said before, if the OP wants to leave LA, it is up to him. When I read the first post of this thread, much of it is true. Having said that, not all of LA is bad. There are plenty of good things about LA too. The people that complain about this place don't see the good and they would rather focus on the bad.

One man's junk is another man's treasure. Some people like LA, some people don't.

LA is good if you have tons of money. It's a terrible, dreadful, awful place if you do not. That's just about the bottom line.

Actually, truly low-density urbanized areas do quite well without big mass transit projects. It's when cities become densely-populated (as L.A. has) that transit becomes more important. I would argue that your statement should have been:

"You cannot have a densely-populated city and still expect everyone to get around in their private automobiles." That is what doesn't work.

Well, at least in LA County, the cops actually work on crime instead of excusing the crime as a "cultural difference" and harassing people on the freeway to make them go 10 mph under the speed limit.

^^^^ *cough* SONOMA COUNTY *cough*

Great OP pacificop.

I think part of the nervousness and fear (esp in the 2000's decade) is money and finance related.

-Part of it is leverage and being overextended. I think LA attracts those that are prone to get way over extended. More so than the typical Appleton, Wi resident. More "financial creativity".

In a place like wisconsin or the midwest, people are more grounded. They know what they own. You don't have the intensity of keeping up with people. Not if your neighbor is a mile down the road.

-LA also tends to attract dreamers, new age types, self help types. Just "believe" that they aren't making any more land. "Believe" Oprah and visualize your new success. Creates a lot of uncertainty in your day to day life.

Typical appleton, wi resident or vermont resident is much more grounded in reality. They didnt buy three homes they couldnt afford. They arent relying on books to tell them what to do in the next 3 months.

wow, alot of posters must've had quite a few really bad experiences! i've been here in LA now for the last 11 years and have never had any of the problems that have been mentioned. granted, i've always been on the westside/southbay/hollywood areas, which do tend to be nicer, so maybe thats the reason.

i've never experienced burglaries, feared my neighbors or anything like that, and none of my colleagues and friends have had such problems either...

guess it all depends on where you live

Los Angeles is not the United States. It's a lost cause in the American Dream. It's a melting pot for people to pretend they are living in the U.S. and capitalize on the economy. As for the rest of us who move here from within the U.S., it just doesn't live up to the standards that the rest of the U.S. holds it's communities to. There is a reason they call this place Tinsel Town. It's a desert mirage. If you turn off the sprinklers, the entire city would dry up into a desert.

Although, if you weren't excepted in your community in the Midwest or East coast, then it's a great place to find yourself. Anyone and anything is tolerated. If you love to paint on the walls in your home town, but you get arrested for it, well come on over, Los Angeles cops won't waste there time arresting you for a little graffiti. You can even throw your trash on the street and your neighbor will be too afraid to mention it to you. Do what ever you want here!

Out of curiosity, how long ago did you move to LA and where did you move here from?
