That probably explains the leaving the white GMC SUV on the pedestrian crosswalk in front of Bloomingdales with the car engine still running in the Ellen show skit, like it was valet parking. Ellen has too many L.A. insider jokes from all those years in L.A. that the rest of America doesn't understand!

I'm willing to bet that skit was part of a promotion by the mall and Bloomingdales. (The Glendale Galleria/Americana complex is much closer to the studio, albeit not directly on the freeway.) The Pottery Barn incident might have been spur-of-the moment improv.

I'm no expert but the thought that an old style department store is the reason to go to a mall just seems to be a remnant of history

My favorite time to shop at malls is during weekday school hours, when there are a minimum of teens.

BTW, I recently purchased a very nice Tommy Hilfiger faux leather jacket at a mall. And that's an excellent example of why tactile shopping is better than mail order, because I was able to inspect the jacket personally and try it on. And I'm glad I did do both, since not all jackets are stitched equally or may have little aberrations here or there, not to mention the sizes are different than they were a decade ago due to America's obesity, so a large today is like an XL in the past, etc.

Northridge mall seems to be doing ok, it's always busy when I been there. I don't go often because I'm on the opposite side of the SFV. They are also building a lot of condos/townhouses directly across from the mall, so I suspect it will be around for a while.

Sherman Oaks seems to be doing quite well too, personally I think all of the malls in the SFV will be around for a while. Well except the Promanade, but I believe there are already new plans for that spot.

I hate what they did with what was once the Galleria. It was a hip, cool, indoor mall (you can see it in the 80's film Commando), and now it's this twisted hulk of inefficiency. When I was there a year ago I wasn't sure where exactly I was walking and had to ask somebody if I'd actually walked the whole mall or if there was more hiding around a corner. What a lame design that is -- if actual Vals saw it they'd say, "Like OMG!"

Yeah there's a lot of dead and/or uninviting space there.

I used to live close to the Galleria and remember how dead it had gotten. They finally surrounded it in construction wrapping and birthed a...monstrosity. Seeing the mall like that felt sad to me, like a part of California was dying.

As for the Vals, many have left the SFV (and the state) but some can be found further out in places like Stevenson Ranch coping with heat, marital infidelity, suburbia, grown kids, etc.

This is what the Sherman Oaks Galleria once looked like -- would somebody care to explain to me what was wrong with it and how it's now improved by turning it into yet another passe outdoorsy promenade thing?
