"It's AmoebaMusic City, Hollywood, Lakewood, Downtown."

Sorry, I'm kinda old and I couldn't resist. People of a certain age now have that tune in their heads.

But! GREAT photos. Thanks!

When was Amoeba Music ever in downtown (let alone Lakewood)? Hollywood is their only SoCal location, and even that didn't open until what, 2001 or so?

OK everybody. I'm old. Like I-remember-Phil-and-Don-when they-went-into-the-Marine Corps old. (And God help us all if you're thinking, "Who the heck are Phil and Don?")

Music City was THE music store in the Southland in the 50's-60's. Records, sheet music, instruments. It's where EVERYBODY went because there weren't that many other stores of that type. Think no malls in Orange County which was why they built a store in Lakewood. They had a jingle which played constantly the radio with the catch line being, "It's Music City, Hollywood, Lakewood, Downtown". Though before they expanded I think the song was "It's Music City, Hollywood and Vine". It was a place you went to even if you had no money just to hang out.

I'm pretty sure KMPC paid their electric bill on that song alone.

Dew Drop Inn: If you remember that - - do you remember when the radio stations told everyone that an ameba was loose and spreading all over the LA and OC area? Everyone was calling in to say they had seen it. It was splitting and going everywhere. It was hilarious. That went on all day and finally they let everyone know it was a joke - that amebas are so tiny no one could really see them.

Wallichs Music City, yeah! They had a satellite store in Costa Mesa as well- sold musical instruments there, and tons of 45s. It was off Bristol, I think, near what is now South Coast Plaza. I wonder where their downtown store was located...?

Some cool shots of old Hollywood, along with some of Music City toward the bottom:

It existed even earlier than that. Fred Wallich who owned Wallich's Music City also co-founded Capitol Records in the early 1940s so there would be a West Coast-based major record label as the others were all based in NYC.

The location of Amoeba only two blocks away from Wallich's Music City's old location on Sunset and Vine is rather fitting.

Never knew there was more than one Wallich's Music City.
