The following link is an article about "walkability" in Los Angeles.

Walkable Los Angeles | Planetizen

The author makes a case for LA being more walkable than most would give it credit for.

So in this thread how about mentioning your favorite "walkable" portion of LA or even So.Calif.

Or what areas are being transformed (or have the potential) for greater walkabilty.

I think most areas with huge outdoor Rick Caruso-type malls are walkable, like the Grove & Americana. Also there are small independent shopping areas like Bev Hills, Montrose, Manhattan Beach & San Pedro that try to preserve a small-town feel and it's easier to just park & walk. But I think the important question is whether there are any pedestrian-friendly zones that have everything from coffee shops to supermarkets to hardware stores all in close proximity. It's great to have boutiques & yogurt shops along a corridor but those aren't the staples of everyday living.

My list of the best pedestrian corridors in LA County would be (no particular order):

Old Town Pasadena
Hollywood Boulevard
3rd Street Promenade (Santa Monica)
Pine Street (Long Beach)
Broadway (Downtown LA)
Wilshire Blvd (Koreatown, Miracle Mile)
Beverly Hills (Rodeo Drive / Wilshire Blvd)
Westwood Village
Melrose Ave (Los Angeles)

the entire coastal section of LA from the 3rd St Promenade down to the Venice Pier at Washington is very walkable. sure it's a fairly large area, but pretty much where ever you're at along the coast you can easily walk to most of your daily needs.

Lots of areas of LA are walkable. I did most of my neighborhood activities (groceries, library, doctor, restaurants, pharmacy, etc.) on foot in both Hollywood and South Pasadena. Many parts of Pasadena are very walkable; Koreatown, East Hollywood, downtown LA, Santa Monica, Burbank, Los Feliz, etc. I don't think there's any question that there are many, many truly walkable (in all sense of the word) areas of the LA area, and I agree that LA as walkable city is often underestimated.

Does anyone think these places are candidates for livable neighborhoods? Or, do these places seem more like entertainment or tourist districts?

I wonder if more than 5% of people in the United States (or first and second world countries) walk to these places on a regular basis.

Yes, I think those places are candidates for livable neighborhoods. Old Pasadena is a very livable neighborhood; there's a lot of housing within very close proximity to the core business areas, as well as easy access to things like grocery stores (there's a Ralphs on Colorado across from the Norton Simon, for example.) And Hollywood, which is definitely a tourist destination, has a very real, functioning neighborhood once you step off of Hollywood Blvd. Even some of the stores on Hollywood Blvd. fulfill neighborhood needs, for that matter. In any case, many people do live in all of the neighborhoods listed, and in many cases, were probably drawn to them because of the walkability factor. Not everyone wants to get in their car and drive everywhere. (I've also noticed more and more real estate ads advertising walkscores on their listings, which I find both useful and a good sign, as I think walkable neighborhoods are the way to go.)

Apparently plenty of people consider them livable neighborhoods.

Hollywood has 85,000 residents
Westwood has 52,000 residents
Koreatown has 124,000 residents
Mid Wilshire has 47,000 residents
Downtown has 40,000 residents
Santa Monica has 87,000 residents
.....
All these people are tourists?

I live in a very walkable part of West LA near Sawtelle. Most everything I need is within walking distance.
