With the amount of love for the game of basketball that Louisville and the State oF Kentucky has,I'm surprised there is no NBA team.I remember in the 60's and 70's there was the Kentucky Colonels of the old ABA located here in Louisville. There seems to be a big enough market to support the team.

Louisville has a long history with professional sports. In the 1970's the city hosted an ABA (a ribal league to the NBA that was just as popular if not more so, and had players like Dr J.) team that had the highest league attendance one year. Louisville was in the ABA with teams like Indiana and San Antonio. Those teams decided to join the NBA, but Louisville's owner decided he did not want in the NBA and folded the team.

This has been a long, drawn out topic. Louisville was a frontrunner for the last two transfers, the Hornets and Grizzlies. I suspect if there had been a new arena built, one of the two would have come. At the time, however, the mayor had weak leadership and there was no promise of a new arena to replace the delapidated (but historic and classic) Freedom Hall, built over 50 years ago. Now, Louisville will open a state of the art arena by 2010 on par with the finest in the NBA. Although UofL is the primary tenant, it is bound to draw the interest of the NBA. Along with Vegas, Louisville is the most logical choice for a team. Oklahoma City has a good argument too, and they are only slightly smaller than Louisville, plus they proved they supported the Hornets after Katrina displaced that team to OKC from NO.

LOL This topic makes me sick so sometimes!! It seems to me that UofL dictates this city to support their own interest. Here we are the so-called "16th largest city" and rather than pursuing an NBA with this new Arena being built, we give UofL first dibbs as the primary tenant of the arena. Louisville's leadership seems to be a bit confused on the issue of rather they want Louisville to be presented as a "big city" or not!

Here's my opinion.... The heck with all pro sports! Kentucky has some of the finest high school and college programs ever found anywhere or any time in our nation. We have an excellent baseball farm team, an arena football farm team, plus four great college campi within a 90 minute or less drive, and that doesn't include the Cincy schools. I'll take the rivalry of UK-IU-WKU-UL any day over paying $ 50.00 to get a nosebleed seat.

Slugger, do you think Louisville needs the NBA to be a "big city"? I don't know, I am up in the air. I think the city can improve in other areas first, and the NBA is not the be all end all. It would be nice for people who relocate and for name recognition, though, especially in Asia and abroad where the NBA is big.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Louisville 2nd only to Atlanta as a convention(business) city of the south? That is a lot more economical than an NBA team.

That's what I mean the average Joe doesn't really know or care what city's rank what in conventions, But they wouldbe familarized with a city who's name is repeated just about every day of the week during the season. That's what I want for Louisville, But without major league sports I don't see that happening.
