Casinos? (Bangor, Biddeford, Washington: buy, tax, live in)

At 5 pm, 59% of the registered voters in my town had voted. The state expects a 35% turnout. I'm proud of my town!

I lived nearby Foxwoods when the promises of revenues,etc came prior to opening. Not one person who was silly enough to think taxes would go down with the great promise of money and jobs...ever saw it. Ledyard is far from a wealthy town hall with lots of money...trust me. And the construction jobs are temporary and the elephant on the front lawn will be there to stay long after.
The great money they claim it will bring in...seen that too. It comes out of the local economy in forms of real revenues from local business..cars never bought, home improvements not made....not for everyone of course but more than you want to believe. This money doesn't come off a press or out of thin air....it comes from other sectors of the local economy. Don't fall for the smoke and mirrors of the profiteers.

I thought this was an excellent post.....thank goodness that Mainers saw thru the smoke and mirrors....and voted against expanding gambling in Maine.

That's unfair government.
Keep Washington County poor... that's the motto that they want us to keep. I won't forgive them for that. It's our county... we live in it.. they don't. ( I amazed we can have food and water too.. oh that's another thing. ... never mind I woke up on the wrong side of the "cot".

The last sentence says it all-so proud of the citizens of this state for seeing through the propaganda.

So the people (who took the time to vote) have spoken for now. So be it. The democratic process took place and that's a good thing IMO.

Having said that, I'll also say that people who can least afford it will still gamble regardless.

Case in point: The Maine State Lottery, Scratch off tickets, High Stakes Bingo, Football Pools, and card tables (were approved at HS).

Riddle me this: How come the lottery is an example of good, clean, "dream a little or a lot" of fun, but casinos are not?

Is is simply because they generate revenue for the state? Is it because it's "only 1 dollar" (unless you have a little problem and have to buy 25 at a pop "just in case')?

I give it 3 - 5 years before it comes back up again.

The commercials will talk usually about the revenues generated but forget the fact it comes from only one source...the local diners ,car dealers, saving accounts, markets,etc. It is proposed as though it is new and free revenue we will miss out on when in reality it is just money redirected from local businesses into the hands of the profiteers and even worse the state. They are always sure to throw around the names of a few programs they claim this will fund or save...many times tugging heartstrings by making them education, children, or the poor. It is nothing more than a scam.

As far as the state lottery....two wrongs have never corrected a right. It is proven fact the poorest areas sell by far the most tickets. Giving away your money in hopes of getting what.... Desperately needed money....sounds like casino almost huh ?

LOL sorry you didnt get your economic engine. 15 years ago the city i lived in was poor and not growing either . But a mega casino was built and then it happened We got a 1,000,000 square ft outlet mall, A horse race track, Several large Hotels, A large Amphitheater the has concerts with up to 25,000 people. The city doubled in size from 35,000 to 70,0000 and became a regional destination. I since have moved back to that city and its much nicer now with lots of new parks and pubic spaces. Its verry clean much of the city is new. And jobs are abundent good paying jobs. And it all started buy an casino See they took the profits from the casino to keep building attractions like the race track and amphitheater. And built a nice area that people want to visit and live in. Good Luck in the Future

Success stories like this are going to further confuse the people who think Foxwoods and similar casinos are comparable to what the Passamaquoddy's wanted.

Wow didnt realize it was an indian casino . I cant belive your state would keep your indians from growing there own business. Keeping the indian nations in poverty is wrong . The Muckleshoot indians were once a very poor tribe . They give back to there community now. They have since also opened a public college no charge open to all indians across the nation. And locals (non indians) are also welcome to take classes also free of charge. 15 years ago there casino started out as a tent casino and grew into a mega destination casino bringing wealth to the area. The casino's in the area draw from Oregon , Idaho, And Canada. And I know several people who quit going to Vegas but stay in state now. I'm not indian I just live close to an Indian reservation and think they deserve a chance succeed . We have taken from them I like giving back a new chance at life and for them to be independent.
