That is a good suggestion on the realtors. And make sure they know that this rental is not temporary for you being in Maine but a first step to eventually buying a home and putting down roots. Ooops.... belay that.... I re-read that you do NOT plan to buy long term.

Well, I saw another apartment this evening and love it. The owner said they would rent to me and all I need to do is fill out the application. It is an old house that is very well-kept and divided into several apartments. There is even a pretty yard for any of the tenants to use. So, I feel better -- even though it's slightly more than I wanted to pay. But it's in a great location on the midcoast. I'm still going to keep my other appointments because you never know, but this one looks good and I can move in right away if my application is deemed satisfactory.

Ehhh, you've been saying that you couldn't find anything and were ready to give up... now it looks like you found a place you really like, but you want to keep looking in case you find something better. I will only point out that the landlord won't be holding it for you if you didn't even fill out an application, so someone else could swoop in and take it. If you indeed really like it, I wouldn't sit on this for long... not more than 24hrs certainly.

The landlord is still working on some things in the apartment to get it ready, and told me to get the application done within the next few days, so I think I'm okay. They were very casual about it. Plus there is one thing about the place that I am not sure about, so I am keeping my appointments for today so I can compare at least a little bit. After today, I don't really have any other appointments lined up because so few people got back to me. BUT I don't want to make an impulsive decision and jump on the very first one I like. Doing that has bitten me in the behind in the past.

It sounds like the OP is submitting an application but isn't letting go of any of their other eggs in case the landlord changes their mind/doesn't like the application.

Yes, that's another factor. I'm only going to be here a short while, so what do I do if rejected? I want to see as many places as possible within this time frame..

Doesn't hurt to keep looking. But get that application submitted right away; make sure that your interest comes through loud and clear.

I met with the owner today and handed in my application. We talked for a bit and it seems like a done deal and I have the apartment, but it's not confirmed yet. They have a procedure to follow, and won't confirm it 'til that is done -- but they were making recommendations to me for local people who would help me get my crap up the staircase (I don't have much and will probably just rent a van to bring my stuff up to Maine), and telling me about a job they'd heard about, getting set up with the electric company and cable, etc. All signs say they like me and want me - and they know how badly I want it. I am still a nervous wreck waiting for that confirmation, though, and probably will be until I sign the lease. Fingers crossed!
